Computer editing question... Email keeps inserting the characters "&gt" into various places.
Edited on Thu Jul-10-08 11:21 PM by Radio_Lady
It's a forwarded email document. I'm having to edit out whatever-it-is and I don't know why they are there.

It looks somewhat like this --- see it in the left column mostly:

http://comments.deviantart.com/4/3680632/723673617

I know I can SEARCH and REPLACE these characters... but offhand, do you know what they mean?

Thanks for your help.

Cordially,

RL in OR

1. &gt is
html code for a greater-than sign.

3. I have no idea how that applies to a text document. Is that what this means?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> appears on each line of the forwarded document.

As each message reaches back in time to the previous message, the email loses its full line of text and it whittles away to one word.

I am trying to remove the line breaks manually and it takes

so much time!

I am trying to

get it

to

reformat.

4. Thanks -- I wouldn't know where to begin with two different email systems --

Back and forth. Comcast.net and my stepdaughter's email service... have to look for that.

I'll just take the time to do it with the delete key.

Thanks.

5. There should be settings that you can change
via a configuration or option menu. Try searching help for "character encoding."

6. UPDATE: Thanks, pokerfan. I imported it into WordPad and dropped all the superfluous characters.

I didn't have time last night to explore my options.

The most I've ever done with extra characters is adding an accent or two in Spanish or French from a GUI.
