Poll question: Which pet should I get.
I have never owned an animal and will be getting a pet shortly.

2. A cat
They're more interesting than dogs, and you don't have to walk them at 6AM on a snow day.

3. I am all for adoption.
Get a pet that you can relate to. The hardest thing in a relationship with another species is communication.

Do you have any plants? If so, are they still healthy? Adopting an animal is a responsibility, that animal will trust you, be sure you are ready for that.

5. Two kittens- preferably siblings.
I think I would start out with cats as they are easier to care for. I am suggesting a pair of cats because they can keep each other company & help groom one another. Seriously, I would adopt siblings because they seem to have a bond.

Here are my two guys;

Flea Taxi & Chairman Meow (relaxing with Buddy & his pup Moe) I found them as kittens on the side of the road. They have been wonderful together. They "play fight" every once in a while but it doesn't get serious. Funny thing is when it gets to sounding bad one of the dogs usually gets concerned enough to break it up. It is usually "Buddy", he just walks over to them and growls a bit until they stop.

Da Lounge is a haven for cat lovers, that's all your gonna get votes for.

I voted dog. Cuz I like dogs. PLEASE do some research on the breed/mix you'll be adopting so you have a basic idea of what to expect. Shelters are full of large breeds dropped off because "I didn't know it would get so big!" (called LARGE for a reason doofuses) border collies "I didn't know they were so active!" Cattle dog/heelers "It kept nipping my kids feet!" (Heeler because they herd by nipping livestock HEELS) etc. I personally am a fan of terrier breeds, I like the tenacity and strong wills, but many people are not suited/willing to deal with them. Herding breeds will herd, hunting breeds will have breed tendencies, sporting breeds are happiest when active, etc.

Evaluate your activity level and the effort you are willing to put into your pet (they aren't decorations, EVERY pet requires some sort of effort, even fish), finances (what will you do if your pet gets sick? Can you afford routine medical care for check-ups and vaccinations?), and also what you are looking for in a pet. Something that want to be with you all the time, something that occasionally wants to spend time with you, somehing that is indifferent to your presence beyond food, something just to look at?

With my dog, I LIKE taking her for walks, playing, training, and having a constant companion, but that is too much for some people.

7. Bearded Dragon

Beautiful lizards native to Austrailia but very popular as pets in the US. I've had 2 so far and loved both of them. They can be very docile and friendly. Mine would sit in my hand, on my shoulder as I walked around the house. They will also take crickets and lettuce out of your hand.

8. Since you have never owned a pet, I recommend doing some research first!
Dogs, cats, and birds are all labor-intensive, IMO. It depends how much time you have to devote to their care.

Plus, don't forget to factor in vet visits, as they can be frequent and expensive.

Goldfish do not live very long. You might want to consider a hamster or something a little easier to start with. JMO
