2. Married with Children certainly has mysoginist content, but I always saw it as

poking FUN at mysoginy, not promoting it. :P

3. One of the first in a long line of television sitcoms that portrayed
the dad as a moran. Unfortunate. I liked the show at the time, but seeing what it started, blech.

24. You didn't look hard, then.
It was a satirical show, mocking stereotypes as much as playing to them.

29. Fair enough! Your time was better spent, I'm sure.
I didn't watch it regularly, but it ran for so long, and was syndicated so much, that I saw more than a couple of episodes.

30. Well, she was equally ditzy.
According to Jim, and some of the newer shitcoms really portray fathers in a poor light. Everybody Loves Raymond, makes the guy out to be an absolute blithering idiot.

31. So did "Fresh Prince". Drove my dad bonkers that the guy was a judge and yet
so inept at times.

32. Yup. Another good example.
Kind of a total reversal from the Father Knows Best and Leave it to Beaver era.

The only show I can think of in recent memory where both parents got respect was the Cosby Show. There might be others, but I can't recall.

33. It reversed pretty early. I think the Darrens from 'Bewitched' were pretty
helpless as well. But to their credit it was due to magic and not their own incompetency.

I'll give it some thought, but yeah "Cosby" is one of the only shows I can think of with two competent parents as well. Maybe "Family Ties" but the dad didn't seem as strong as the mom. (Haven't seen it since it originally aired when I was a teen, so that impression could be completely off.)

I don't watch a lot of current sitcoms so I am not sure about the crop du jour. I love "Eureka" which while quirky is no sitcom, but it does have a single father situation present. His character is supposedly not too bright either, yet he manages to save the day over and over and deals with his daughter about how one would expect a real dad to do it.

34. It started as 'stinging satire', by season 5 was a cartoon, by season 7 was just vulgar.

4. Yes and no.....
In my opinion, Married... With Children took the worst of the worst stereotypes (bratty kids, idiot husband, lazy and selfish wife, asshat neighbors) and developed characters around them with the actions amplified to the nth degree. It was decidedly lowbrow humor, and never pretended to be anything but.

Since quite a few episodes were penned and directed by Marcy Darcy/Jefferson (Amanda Bearse), I find it hard to believe that any of it was intended in a hateful way.

9. It was one of the funniest shows on TV at the time,
and few have approached it to this day.

Don't you people laugh at anything?
Is it not correct to do so?

No, "we people" find humor in a great variety of things, while some of us don't. There's no line to be toed here.

FOX's Sunday night line-up of the early 90's was SERIOUSLY must-see TV for me.

Simpsons, Herman's Head, Flying Blind, Married..., Get a Life, etc... Loved 'em all!

It was a hilariously cynical view of American Families, Pop Culture and gender roles.

20. Often refered to as satire, even.
Like Andrew Dice Clay or Larry the Cable Guy. You take a stereotype to extreme to point out how ridiculous certain attitudes are. Borat did that, too, but I don't want to profane Borat by mentioning him in the same sentence as Diceman or Larry.

14. Of course. It was also biting, dumb comedy.
I think it really ran out of gas after its first few seasons, though. It also lost something when it really began to attract the demographic that it initially took the piss out of.

35. I got turned off of that show not because of the show itself but because how people misinterpreted
sitting next to a bunch of clueless 20 something guys and pretty much their engagement of the show was to ogle the blond daughter and identify with Al. The humor was lost on them and I don't like the show because a lot of its fans liked it for the wrong reasons...
