Who cares about the environment? The Rapture is coming soon anyhow...
An 11 year old said this to my daughter last night when she gave him crap for throwing a plastic Gatorade bottle on the ground.
This is the same kid that told her last year they could not be friends if she believes in evolution. This is the same kid that said

This kid and his mom go to the same church that told an 80 year old farmer I know that he can grow a new hand (he lost one in a farm accident 50+ years ago) if his faith is "strong enough."

My kid says he has told her she is gonna go to hell because she doesn't go to church every Sunday. I asked her how she responded to all this and she said she just doesn't want to hang out with him any more. I tend to agree with her.

I am curious--what say all of you? I have always tried to work with the attitude of whatever is working for you is fine by me--but this really is just too far out for me to absorb. How would you handle it with YOUR kid?

1. As a Christian this is some of the stupidity that makes me angry at Christianity
No, not about you and your kid but the idiots that say that kind of crap.

I think it's best that you keep your child away from this person. Unfortunately sometimes stupidity is contagious and surely we don't want your child catching it from a kid like that. I've seen how these fundie groups work to where they'll latch on to someone elses kid and try to convert them (from sane Christianity or other faith to stupidity) behind the backs of the parents.

I'm going to assume your child has other sane children to play with or if not get them involved in groups that can expand the friends. As for faith, religion and Christianity, I think it's normal for a child to ask questions and parents should provide answers that can help them grow in regards to this area. Truly I believe that even an Athiest can show faith by simply living by the teachings of Jesus which is to treat others as equals and help those in need.

3. Well, she is a really amazing kid and not easily led into anything.
I'm gonna brag a bit here, but when they had the conversation about evolution she explained to him that her opinion was that genetic mutations might just be God's way of giving a species a bit of help. Yep, my (then) ten year old was getting into the debate on the subject with one of her playmates. It helped a bit that we had discussed this at one point as a family.

IMO, every major religion is about us making ourselves "better" and kinder. They all are talking in some way about a code of living that is kind, thoughtful and compassionate. I guess I'm just too much of a Universalist to get all wrapped up in the fire and brimstone stuff that is so popular with some of the fundy set. (Frankly, I have always kind of wondered if some of them have actually ever made it as far as the New Testament--but that is for another discussion.)

To be brutally honest, I worry about that kid sometimes because I wonder if he'll ever launch a rebellion against some of what these people are telling him. This kid has never dressed up for Halloween, nor has he ever gone out to Trick or Treat. Yeah, that is small stuff, but if they are controlling him that much you just KNOW there is more going on with him. I think he's gonna resent it one day.

I have some family members that are pretty fundy, and I tend to avoid discussions of certain subjects with them. I think maybe my kid will come to that same attitude with this kid one day.

Oh--and did I remember to mention that he asked her who she thought should be President? Her response was that she likes Obama because he gave her a noogie when she met him. He told her that Obama is the "Anti-Christ." She asked me about it later and I explained to her that some folks dislike Obama because he doesn't look or think like they do. I could tell she was not completely comfortable with that and we went a little further with it. I reminded her that the media was ALL over Obama at one point because his MINISTER said some stuff the conservatives did not like. Her face lit up and she said she wanted to discuss THAT with the kid.

My kid is nothing if not scrappy.

4. When he's coming over I want to lay a set of clothing out in the yard for each of us.
Just kinda lay them there like they dropped off when we all got "raptured."

I guess I really am an evil woman.

6. LOL!...Sounds like something I'd do....except I'd go even further...I...
..would hook up something in the back yard tree (if you had a tree)....then attach the daughter to some
theatrical guide wires (very thin but very strong and safe)..
When the Kid came over, I'd pull her up and get her to say...
"Hallelujah, I coming to join Ya, Jesus" :)

5. I figured you'd been on a recon mission to Rapture Ready
Virtually every post there about "global warming" (they invariably put it in quotes) is accompanied by an eyeroll smilie or a laughing smilie.

They're insane, of course — but not just because of this.

8. I was in high-school during Reagan's first term
I was attending a fundie Baptist church myself at the time, but I never was fully immersed in the doctrine, especially the parts where they worshiped Reagan rather than Jesus Christ.

Some of the kids I went to school with didn't seperate the two. They literally believed that it was completely OK if Reagan started a nuclear war with the Russians because "Jesus would pull us off the earth before the missiles hit".

I asked for the chapter & verse that he got that from, but he couldn't really produce any. So I said, well Jesus might do so, and He may not. It's called the "Tribulation" for a reason, and I'd rather Reagan didn't take the chance on a big "maybe".

I don't think they ever understood why I couldn't accept their bobble headed false Messiah.
