Am I being anal here?
My department is having a staff retreat. Some items on our agenda are fun things, but of course we will be working too. One of the fun things we are supposed to do is fill out a Myers-Briggs form, submit it, and the results will go to the supervisor to be discussed during our retreat.

I was clearly taken aback at the suggestion of this task? Maybe I'm being overly suspicious, but I really don't want to participate. One colleague did not know anything about this test, and thinks it will be fun. Frankly, I don't.

Just wondering if anyone else has any thoughts about this.

My supervisor clearly knows that I'm not happy about this exercise, but I'm wondering what the repercussions will be if I refuse to answer and submit the questions for evaluation.

seem legitimate, but my colleagues know I collect nothing. That would involve dusting! Grrrrrrrr!

5. Forcing you to take a Myers-Briggs defeats the whole purpose...
It would be just like a Management team to do something like that. :eyes:

11. Actually, even though it
was presented as a fun thing, I'm totally suspicious. I honestly don't think my supervisor has any hidden agenda here, but all the same, I'm clearly uncomfortable participating in this exercise.

7. Hit your supervisor with a bat BEFORE you refuse.
Your refusal will matter little. Problem solved.

8. I wouldn't be threatened by the Myers-Briggs.
I've done that test before, though not at staff events.

13. I really don't feel threatened,
but it truly is a personality test. And frankly, results can change dependent one's mood, or really any other outside influences while taking the test.

My thoughts are that the results will change peoples perception about their colleagues, based on an unscientific test.

14. You might actually enjoy it.
I was skeptical the first time I was prompted by my management to participate in that. The spin was a team building exercise.

We ended up laughing at how many of us were alike. In a room of 30 people, all but 4 of us were INTJ.

16. i certainly wouldn't participate in that event
the repercussions might be worse if you did answer the questions

some things aren't "fun," they are blatant violations of privacy, and they don't have a right to fuck around in your head this way

18. Meh.
They do this at companies all the time. My dad is really into this stuff as a retired manager. Don't think it was ever used "agaisnt" someone as far as I know. Its usually used in judging how best to organize groups of people efficiently..ie who is more likely to work well together, who is gonna butt heads. Its a management tool and a fairly benign one.

23. We did this at my work
It was in groups. Sales, Warehouse, Repair shop, Automation, and Administration. I am in the administration area and was with the owner, president and vice president. It was quite interesting and I believe it made us all know and understand more about each other. I have been with my company for almost 10 years and things opened up that I had not known. We are a small oilfield business that is really building up in our area. 40 employees in two locations and we are pretty much like family. Who knows, you may learn something.
