Windows Vista "Sleep" question |
|
Edited on Fri Jul-11-08 05:14 PM by Orrex
Recently, our PC has started waking up from Sleep mode apparently all by itself. It used to be that you had to double-click the mouse or hit the "enter" key to wake the computer, but no longer. Sometimes I'll put it to Sleep and go into the next room to read or watch tv or whatever, and I'll look over and the PC is up and running again.
This appears to have developed in the last week or so, possibly arising after I tripped the breaker for the outlet where the computer is.
As far as I can discern, there are no other problems with the PC's performance.
Any guesses? How do I reset the Sleep settings, or at least the conditions that wake the computer from Sleep?
And anyone who advises me to by a Mac is a covert Republican.

2. Don't have access to XP, though I loved it when I had it |
|
This is a new PC that came with Vista pre-installed. To date, this has been our only problem, and I admit that it's comparatively minor.
Still, I'd like to get it cleared up, because it's a pain to power down after every use.

3. See if there's a place that can convert it for you. |
|
I got one with Vista pre-installed. Took me a month to straighten out the problems it caused. Screwed up my network, had to find all new drivers for peripherals that were only 2 weeks older than the Vista computer, screwed up my Vonage.
We have a place that builds/repairs computers close to us. They replaced the Vista with XP. I never want to see that piece of crap masquerading as an operating system again. Hell, I had less trouble when I was running ME.

I *think* I know what it may be...
When I got my new system in Oct. of last year, it was doing precisely the same thing, although mine did it from the moment I set the system up. However, when I had to get rid of my cable and internet (personal budgetary stuff), it immediately stopped. My guess is that there's a minor bug that wakes the computer up from sleep mode when it begins an automatic update.
Maybe you could either turn off Automatic Updates or unplug your internet connection and then observe your system to see if it continues. If it does, then all I'm doing is flinging hooey at you. But if I'm right and it is getting awakened by updates, then voila!
Like I said, it's just a guesstimate on my part...
Don't ever get a Mac-- image is nothing :hide:

5. My system (Vista Ultimate 64-bit) slept perfectly well until recently... |
|
About the same period of time as yours.
Methinks a patch from Microsoft is the culprit...
With luck they'll patch their patch soon.
Hibernate still works, but sleep mode is faster. :)

7. I think I'm all set now |

I was reluctant to use Google because that always feels like cheating, somehow...
But thanks to your link I have learned a solution that appears to work, so far. My suspicion was that the optical mouse was causing the computer to wake up, but it didn't occur to me that the system's power management choices were device-specific. I unclicked the "allow this device to wake the computer" option, and that seemed to do the trick.
Thanks to everyone for responding. We'll see how this works out...
