Plimpton's book was a good behind-the-scenes look at the NFL of the mid-1960s -- the movie, on the other hand, was a typical Hollywood "feel-good" fantasy where the "ordinary joe" triumphs over the establishment (including the hostility of his "real" teammates) and becomes the game-winning hero. It never happened in real life (where many of the players knew about Plimpton's identity right off the bat, and the league forbade the Lions from actually playing him in any games).
