Squirrels! *shakes fist*
Any loungers have success keep them outta your bird feeders? I've seen all these fancy-schmacy "squirrel proof" feeders and before I invest $25 buck (or more) I'd like to know if they actually work.

Thoughts?

How do y'all keep the buggers out?

1. A squirrel-proof feeder.
I have the kind with spring-loaded perches and the weight of anything heavier than a blue jay causes all of the seed ports to close. Sometimes the squirrels try to figure it out but they can't and move to the spillage under the feeder. That area gets a healthy dose of cayenne powder on a routine basis.

You can mix cayenne in with the seed in your current feeder to slow down the squirrel assaults until you buy a new feeder. The cayenne doesn't bother the birds.

4. I set out some peanut butter to see if they'd eat that instead.
Right now, there's one little booger sitting about 6 yards away from me...

he's scoping it out. I think they like the PB.

11. I've got a solution.
One which may be doomed to hilarious failure, of course.

The dome atop ours does the trick from above, but at least one squirrel has figured out how to streeeeeetch out from between the rail supports on my deck, and juuuuust grab the feeder and pull it close, stuffing his face while hanging out sideways. I've bought a 2'x3' sheet of plexiglas to put on the outside of the deck, putting (I hope) the feeder out of reach.

I join you in a ceremonial fist-shaking.

13. ...and here's the little acrobat now!
Hastily shot with auto-focus still on. Here's his stretch, which I hope will be defeated by the plexiglas:

17. they can eat...
the problem is they eat the whole feeder full of food so there's nothing left for the birds.

21. You need my birds...
I've got crows and ravens in my backyard. I don't feed them, I just make sure the birdbath is clean and full. They eat the squirrels. Notably, the crows are not interested in the bird-feeder...and the squirrels aren't either anymore. Thus, my bird-feeder has a bright array of songbirds.

22. I fill my feeders that have the spring that shuts if something heaver than a
little bird is hanging on the feeders. I then leave a little squirrel/chipmunk pile underneath the feeders for my other critters. Any of the seeds that sprout are eaten by the bunny that lives in my urban "menagerie". Everyone's happy. LoL.
