Name "huge" celebrities who you are simply not impressed with
The "winners" for me are:

Jennifer Aniston
Tom Cruise

I'm sure there are others, but these are the two I think are just very lucky with agents, make-up artists, opportunities and nepotism. :)

37. One thing I will never quite understand
is how some of these people became famous. Not that we didn't have "celebrities" when I was growing up, but at least some of them could be recognized for having some "thing" to be famous for. The Gabor sisters, for example, were pretty beautiful in their youth, and Phyllis Diller was a successful comedienne. Sure, there were the celebrities whose claim to fame was working on Hollywood Squares, but that was what put them on the map to begin with in some cases.

Now, you get brainless, immature role models who really shouldn't be strutting like they owned the place, and just because you're an heiress doesn't mean you should be treated like royalty. ;)

18. She had the bebes today
Boy - "Knox" and Girl - "Vivienne"

What's the deal with them naming all the boys end-in-x names, anyway? Maddox, Pax, and now Knox. ... Let's see, they can still have a Max and a Rex, then maybe "Sox" and "Hex" and "Sex" and "Xymox," and then I think they're pretty much done.

39. Interestingly
I haven't cared all that much for Julia Roberts, either, but I've come to enjoy Nicolas Cage. Whether it means much or not, he's got an easy, genial acting presence, and he chooses some of his acting jobs well. He knows his range, and he works within it, but he can be very much of a surprise when he chooses to be. I don't know too many other actors who could pull off both National Treasure and Leaving Las Vegas.

26. Well, Matthew McConaughey is the worst actor who ever lived, bar none.
Then we have Ben Stiller, David Caruso (a distant second to McConaughey), and a lot of people who have already been mentioned.

As for females, I am not impressed by Cameron Diaz or Maggie Gyllenhaal and wonder why they're considered so special.

Highly overrated people who are gushed about constantly but never struck me as anything special include Helen Mirren and Heath Ledger. Not to speak ill of the dead, but now that he IS dead he's being treated like the second coming.

36. What's funny is Kate's brother, Oliver,
who is really hot, is just under 30. If I were younger, I would consider him a babe. Except I'm old enough to be his mother. Barely! (Nah--I still consider him a babe. :))

(For those who are not pop culture savvy, Oliver plays one of the main cast of a TV series called Rules of Engagement. He's not the silent brooding male (Patrick Warburton) or the short, long-haired often-a-sleazeball bachelor (David Spade), but the youngest, newly engaged one.)

She's pretty but if she had to make hollywood on her own acting merits she wouldn't be there. The only exception I would make was her role in "Almost Famous" - she was outstanding in that but now she's nothing more than a romcom hack.

72. I can't imagine why.
His acting is superb. Those that say that he acts the exact same in every movie he's in really have no appreciation for the difficulty and the raw acting talent it takes to appear as yourself in whatever role you are portraying.

And can you not see what a prolific and talented songwriter he is? I mean, with deep, poignant, and meaningful lyrics like "na na na na na na" and "yeah yeah yeah, uhh," what's not to like? Not to mention that it takes true talent to rip off another song every time you "create" one of yours.

:sarcasm:

I totally agree with you. I truly do no understand why people like him so much.

56. Justin Timberlake, Michael Jackson, Prince
Edited on Mon Jul-14-08 09:47 AM by PeterU
A lot of the huge celebrities I can give or take.

I don't like them enough where I will jump to their defense, but neither do I dislike them enough to name them by name.

Like Oprah. I am totally neutral on Oprah. Neither hate her or love her. I think it was cool she used to be a reporter for WJZ in Baltimore, and I watched WJZ news, but that's about it.

I guess Justin Timberlake does qualify though. I just think he is a Michael Jackson wannabe, and why anyone wants to be like Michael Jackson any more, I have no idea.

And for that matter, Michael Jackson. And Prince. Never liked either of them, even when they were big back in the 1980s. I don't understand why either of them get the words "genius" attached to them when they are both pretty mediocre, IMHO.

There are some more minor or niche celebrities or talking heads that I'm not that impressed with, but I wouldn't call them "huge." Like, for example, I think Kevin Smith's movies are highly overrated despite all the buzz from the fanboy/hipster crowd. (And for all the fanboy/hipster/Kevin Smith fans, I do apologize. But I just don't like Kevin Smith, that's all.)

58. Tom Hanks
Jennifer Aniston--Yup, I agree.

Harrison Ford.
Will Smith--although he does seem very nice, and I love his wife but I haven't liked a movie he's made since Bad Boys.
Tom Cruise.

I am sure there are others but my brain isn't really working right now.

61. Ed McMahon?
He's even got a plaque on our walk of fame (Philadelphia). It's sort of embarrassing to see him associated there with people like Gene Kelly and Dizzy Gillespie.

If they impressed me, they probably wouldn't be celebrities.

78. Not as "huge" as he used to be, but Kevin Costner
Edited on Mon Jul-14-08 12:34 PM by Rob H.
One of the most god-awful actors I've ever seen (on par with David Caruso and Keanu Reeves, imo). I'm dumbfounded that he still gets offered movie roles.

Edited to add Eva Longoria. Cute, yes, but I'm sick of hearing about her.

87. Amy Winehouse
If her skin were several shades darker she'd never have been a blip on anyone's (well, the police and NHS maybe )radar. And while I'm at it, "edgy" and "sad, pitiful junkie killing yourself in front of the world" are not necessarily synonymous.
