33. UPDATE: I'm going to a Naked Ladies bathing suit optional evening swim next weekend!
Edited on Sun Jul-13-08 10:51 PM by Radio_Lady
Dynamite! It's sponsored by the local Unitarian Universalist fellowship I attend. Saturday, July 19th, at 7 PM. $18.00 for snacks and wine. No men in sight! Cool! We were told that it would be on a night during a beautiful phase of the moon. Will it be FULL???

I'll slip off my one-piece Tyr racing suit in the water quite decorously and fondly remember the days I swam with my tiny children in Miami. I don't do bikinis... have had an "outie" belly button since I was born. It should have been repaired when I was a baby, but it wasn't. I was evaluated for surgery on it decades ago, but it was decided to not be medically necessary. My young grandkids have fun with it in the bathtub. I put two eyepencil eyes and a lipliner pencil mouth on it -- it's a happy face! They laugh and laugh! They want me to show the neighbor kids, but I don't...

and you have a ton of fun.

You know, these days there are lots of things that can be done with belly buttons. Pierce that sucker and put a hoop earring through it.

37. Not a chance. I don't do elective piercings, tattoos, or any other kind of surgery.
Edited on Sun Jul-13-08 11:03 PM by Radio_Lady
My ears got pierced at age 40. My hymen went quite a bit earlier... Those were enough fun for me.

I think there's only one small tattoo of a hummingbird on my 45 year old stepdaughter. My daughter, age 40, had her ears pierced at about 12, then put a second pierce in one ear, but then let it close up. My 39 year old son had one ear pierced, but then let it close up. He's a Mormon now. I don't think they allow it, but not sure. It just ran its course.

No, I'm waiting for the next fads. My local grandchildren, ages 7 and 10, think piercings and tattoos are gross.

No lie...I really thought that was a Photoshop at first-glance. I didn't think he had that much hair either. Frankly, I'm a little jealous.

30. Now, come on, you two P's in a pod! My personal history is... mine personally.
Edited on Sun Jul-13-08 10:37 PM by Radio_Lady
:hide:

What kind of mileage will you two -- plus the two posts under you which are IGNORED -- get out of THIS thread??? I have to watch you people every minute.

You know I'm here to defend Larry King, a/k/a Larry Zeiger, a nice Jewish boy from Brooklyn who had to change his ethnic name. His friendship was worth MORE than money to me -- he totally changed my life. How can you value something as wonderful as a person who quite accidentally gives you an important break?

After one initial date in the late 1950s, I heard his on-air plea for donuts and coffee and showed up unexpectedly at WIOD. He didn't remember me, but invited me to stay and screen the calls he was getting on his 11 PM to 5 AM program. He gave me tickets to events in Miami, but then he wouldn't show up most of the time. But I was there with extraordinary wealthy and interesting people. I had my own life's experiences on TV and of course, people tell me I have the gift of gab.

It's hard to explain what my relationship was about in late 1971 to early 1972. It was all a stroke of luck. Larry never gave me a dime. He had had at least two wives and two children at the time, as I recall. There wasn't that much intimacy and I couldn't even tell you if it was all that bad or good. I honestly don't remember.

What Larry (and his cohort-in-comedy Gary) did was made me laugh at a time in my life when most of my days were spent scraping together anything you could call a life. During that time, I don't even remember most of what I did. Mostly, I showed up a couple of nights a week and screened calls. Periodically, I gave him an hour-long audio tape of "listener opinions" which I got by going to one of the local malls and recording peoples' thoughts on mundane subjects. Not much politics or sports. (Think of Jay Leno's feature "jaywalking" without pictures!) I found it easy to do, and on days when I did it, we could all go home at 4 AM instead of 5 AM. I'm glad I had the talent to produce and host those segments.

Once, I gave him chicken soup when he was ill with fever in his beautiful but tiny apartment. I took care of his three-year-old daughter Chaia when he had custody; she was beautiful and just a year older than my daughter Linda, who is turning 40 in October.

Larry was a sweet, gentle and street-smart young man in his 20s when we went on only a single arranged date in Florida. Not classically handsome, but acceptable, he wore thick glasses. The picture at www.mugshots.com really doesn't do him justice. I think he looks a little like David Schwimmer. Larry was friendly and kind to his guests. He was curious about many subjects. He spun records and did mostly entertainment or author interviews with visiting celebrities. He did comedy routines. His TV sportscasting was phenomenal, and he was on radio and TV and had a newspaper column in the Miami Beach Sun.

His personal hygiene was impeccable, but his finances were clearly in a mess. I couldn't help him with that. He was arrested in December 1971, on a financial matter -- but never indicted or convicted. It took him years to get his life back together. I am so pleased he is still active and involved with so many positive pursuits. They just named a street after him. Did you see that? Larry will be 75 on November 19, 2008.

Meanwhile, I was back in the 70s, I found myself in the right place at the right time when he was arrested. I called the program manager of WIOD, and told him I needed work -- could I take over temporarily? No chance I would want that shift permanently -- it was a killer. I had day and night care for my kids. The PM said he'd hire me three nights a week or so -- while they were interviewing male hosts to fill the slot. I was grateful for the $50 a night and the chance to do the show. Believe me, it wasn't easy. I had an earful as a woman -- "Who are you? Where's Larry? You're not as good as Larry. Why don't they put a man on? Why don't you talk about sports?" The bias was so palpable you could cut it with a night.

As far as I know, Sally Jessie Raphael was on the radio in the daytime in West Palm Beach (I was a guest on her show during that time.) We were the only local women on Miami radio that I am aware of. Furthermore, I had co-hosted a children's TV show in 1957-58 while in college, then had other resume credits in New York City TV production, plus the degree from the University of Miami in Communications. I had the resume... just needed the chance.

It came one April day when I did a program with Bruce Lee (no, another Bruce Lee), the overnight host in Boston. We had done a show together and he presented the tape to the program manager, Dan Griffin. Dan was looking for a woman for the 10 AM - 2 PM shift. They flew me up to Boston, interviewed me for eight hours, and hired me a few weeks later.

I had to be in Boston ready to go on May 15, 1972. I believe that was a Monday.

Larry's brief and oblique friendship was worth more than gold ingots to me. I can't even value it except to say once again "He changed my whole life."

Because if offered $10 million to do something I found offensive (like killing someone or otherwise letting greed make me hurt another person) I'd demand the cash up front.
