Uh oh! My mom has strep throat and pink eye. Am I a selfish bitch?
I don't discount my mother's misery with this at all. And I am being extra attentive with waiting on her with hot packs for her eye, hot tea and other soothing remedies for her sore throat, serving her chicken noodle soup or broth in bed, etc.

Maybe I am a selfish bitch, but I realize these things are contagious, and I'll likely get both too now. I'm a big girl with broad shoulders, and getting sick occasionally is a fact of life. Oh well.

I just get so more damned sick than others do with the same thing, and it takes me 5 times longer, at least, to recover. Ugh!

On a positive note, I know my mother will take good care of me when it's my turn. She's a total sweetheart like that. :)

1. lots of clorox for cleaning and wash hands with soap often!
don't touch your eyes or any mucus membranes for that matter unless you have washed your hands thoroughly.

Hope it works for you.

4. yep mostly for the pinkeye, but with any kind of infections/caregiving
you do yourself and the patient a favor by keeping fairly sterile.

10. Clorox? That sounds a bit harsh for eyes or throat. Or even hands.
Do you mean Clorox for regular cleaning? Like sinks and dishes and counters, and stuff like that?

Oh Hell, mom just got up. Her eye is fire red now, and just melting with goop. I am taking her to a Dr. today.

11. Clorox for regular cleaning, yes.
A weak solution for hands is ok, or get some of that antibacterial gel stuff. A small amount even on colored laundry may kill more germs.

Clorox is probably a bad idea for eyes. Not recommended for gargling either, yecchh.

If the Dr gives her antibiotics, see if you can get a round of it for yourself at the same time. No point in passing this back and forth.

Good luck.

12. NO! Do NOT use clorox in eyes or mouth!!!!
Clorox for cleaning house/laundry. Dilute won't hurt most skin but NOT for eyes or mucus membranes! Use good old soap to wash hands. Anti-bacterial if you want but real soap does the job just fine (and much cheaper)if you wash correctly.

14. Thanks Kali. I figured out what you meant.
Mom is playing phone tag to get an appointment as we speak.

And, no Clorox going around here for throat remedies or eye packs. That just didn't sound like a good idea to me.

I was born on a Wednesday, but it wasn't LAST Wednesday!

2. airborne
Go get some Airborne. It's full of herby things that build up your immunity, like echinacea and ginger. It's just a fizzy tablet you drop in water. It works for me. It was developed by an elementary school teacher who kept catching colds and stuff. You can find it everywhere.

Next: frequent handwashing. When someone is sick in my house, I constantly wash my hands after touching doorknobs and faucets, etc. I spray things like the phone with a disinfectant and use a tissue if I have to touch something that might be germy.

And I never catch what they have.

Airborne To Refund Customers

The following news may not astonish many of you, but feel free to quietly claim your cut: The makers of Airborne, a line of popular herbal supplements that was marketed as a "miracle cold buster," have decided to settle the false-advertising complaints in a class-action lawsuit for $23.3 million, according to one of the plaintiffs in the suit.

While agreeing to reimburse customers for up to six purchases of Airborne products, the company made no stunning admissions. "Defendants deny any wrongdoing or illegal conduct, but have agreed to settle the litigation," the company said in a statement.

Under the agreement, a special Web site was created here to accept claims from customers, who have spent far more than $23.3 million on the range of Airborne products, from Airborne On-the-Go and Airborne Nighttime to Airborne Gummi and Airborne Power Pixies, which is sweetened for children.

6. its mostly C and hasn't passed most scrutiny for effectiveness,
but I took it this winter and subjectively felt it helped. I also start on massive doses of plain C at early signs of sickness in me or others in the house and for cold like stuff I think zinc lozenges help too. Best of all is to try to eat and sleep right.

9. Ahhh! She just finally went to bed, with a hot pack I made for her eye.
I'm prepared to step up to the plate for her as long as it takes. She'd do the same for me, and has.

13. Get her to Dr. if you haven't. Eyes probably need antibiotics.
Most pinkeye is bacterial.
