THE OWNERS of the Washington Nationals are adding a new definition to Webster's with their refusal to pay the District rent for the new ballpark. It's less the money (though the amount is substantial) than the team's refusal to play ball with a city government that risked much for baseball.
The Nationals, owned by the family of developer Theodore N. Lerner, have refused to pay $3.5 million in rent, and the team is demanding damages to the tune of $100,000 a day. As The Post's Daniel LeDuc and David Nakamura reported, the team contends that the $611 million Nationals Park is incomplete. Never mind the flawless Opening Day or the almost 50 games that followed. Never mind Mr. Lerner's comments on Opening Day: "Everybody has done a wonderful job on this ballpark." Never mind that the team apparently considered the place complete enough to rent it out for events such as the D.C. High School Baseball Classic and an appearance by Pope Benedict XVI, with the team pocketing the revenue.
