Who is the greatest asshole in movie history? Post your nominations here!
If this thread gets decent response, I'll compile it into a poll to determine the greatest 'prick of the cinema.'
So...playing an asshole. There is perhaps no greater joy for an actor to play not just a bad guy, but a complete dick. These guys aren't just evil, they're real jerks about it, and they're not always necessarily bad guys either.
I'll start it off with one of MY personal favorite movie assholes...
Carter Burke from 'Aliens'

Paul Reiser gets the best role of his life as this smarmy, callous prick from the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. Concerned only with returning a specimen of the alien, he attempts to sabotage the mission, causes the death of all the colonists, and releases a facehunger to attempt to impregnate Newt and Ripley. He justifies his horrendous actions with dollar signs. He thinks all the deaths are a 'real shame,' but he obviously is glad to kill whoever and whatever is necessary to get what he wants. The ultimate heartless corporate bloodsucker, Carter Burke is a stone cold prick, and my first pick for the greatest asshole in movie history!
Now one of you guys give it a shot!

44. His reputation is exactly the opposite.
He's a well liked co-star who is known for his professionalism and for being an Oscar magnet, in that many of his films have garnered Oscars and nominations for those working alongside him. Jamie Foxx, Jack Nicholson, Paul Newman, Cuba Gooding, Jr... long list. He's worked with, often at their request, the most respected names in Hollywood: Robert Redford, Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Poul Thomas Anderson, Steven Speilberg, many more. Seems unlikely they'd want to work with him if he were such an asshole.

That's irrelevant, though. The thread was about characters, not the actors.

24. Doug Hutchinson as Percy Wetmore in The Green Mile
Edited on Mon Jul-14-08 03:53 PM by southpaw

Every bit as sadistic as he is cowardly, Percy's treatment of the prisoners (and the mice) on death row makes his ultimate comeuppance one of the most satisfying in movie history.

The horrible death of Eduard Delacroix (Michael Jeter) is the direct result of Percy sabotaging the execution... then he's too much of a weakling to watch.

146. First one I thought of, too

I hate bullies/cowards, and he is a textbook example. As much as the executions depicted in the film might speak against capital punishment, old Percy's depredations kinda argue for it...though I guess he got a more fitting resolution in the story.

As brilliant as The Shawshank Redemption is, I think I may actually prefer The Green Mile with a very slight edge. It's a harder film to watch, though. Didn't see either film until 2006, but they were worth the wait.

Maybe not the ultimate, but still a real asshole. He shoots his partner Porter, in the back, because he doesn’t want to share the loot with him, as he needs it to buy his way back into the mafia.

Then he gets Porter’s wife hooked on dope to keep her out of the way. He beats women up before and during sex and he shot the dog.

30. Ralph Macchio in the Karate Kid
Inserts himself into an emotionally charged argument between Elisabeth Shue and her boyfriend, taking her side apparently because she's blonde and has big boobs, picks a fight with her ex-boyfriend, gets his ass kicked and loses his newly found friends.

Picks a fight with one of Johnny's friends on the soccer field and gets himself kicked off the team.

Spies on Shue, misinterprets a situation and throws a tantrum.

Picks another fight by soaking Johnny with a hose. Gets his ass kicked again.

Every step of the way, Daniel-san is the passive-aggressive instigator.

52. Albert Spica in The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover

I know nobody will have seen that very weird, arty, gross flick. Albert Spica is one of the most revolting characters ever to be portrayed on screen.

Guess what he played?
An asshole. Just about as big an asshole as you can get, for a Disney/Squaresoft game, considering his character was basically responsible for wiping out almost all life in the universe and also conducted horribly torturous experiments on people to see 'how much darkness their heart could take before it collapsed,' and loved to torment people emotionally as much as physically. A full-on, grade A asshole in the extreme.

Also stole the idea for the execrable "Dark Angel" series from a Japanese manga artist named Yukito Kishiro (Gunnm, aka Battle Angel Alita).

Quick story - guy I lived with when I first moved to Hollywood did FX work. His buddy worked on True Lies (built the horse prop Ahnuld "rides" in the elevator at the beginning of the film).

Guy's 8-months pregnant wife shows up at the end of the day's shoot to pick him up. Cameron proceeds to SCREAM at her - "who the fuck are you, get the fuck off my set you bitch!"

Her husband had to APOLOGIZE to Cameron to keep his job.

154. A Character from Star Wars..A New Hope.
Edited on Wed Jul-16-08 05:39 PM by Stuart G
Since this is a changing character, I would list him only in, "A New Hope"
As I left the theater in l977, I recall that this villain was so well drawn that you couldn't do anything but hate him......OR "what an asshole."........

So little did we know, there was more to it than that..\.......
therefore....I also vote for first impressions as we left the theater in l977 of:

.......DARTH VADER

162. Stellan Skarsgård as "Gregor" in "Ronin" with Robert deNiro...
Edited on Thu Jul-17-08 03:12 AM by Dr_eldritch

Gregor is the double-crossing thief who steals a case the Russian mob wants. He nearly blows the head off a girl at a playground as a negotiating tactic, then arranges the assasination of an innocent figure skater just to leverage the Russian mob boss who's dating her.

164. Heston as the Cardinal in the Oliver Reed 'Three Musketeers'
He was an asshole.

Also Jan Malmsjo aka the Bishop in Fanny and Alexander (1982). He was an asshole whose crazy famous last words 'the pain' got cheers in the theater I was in--- cruelty to assholes is philosophically wrong but...

166. Stanley Tucci's character in "Big Trouble"
Nobody's seen "Big Trouble", but it's hilarious. It has an amazing cast, and Tucci plays a guy you're actively hoping will get whacked, sooner than later. In the meantime, you're laughing till you're crying!
