Poll question: favorite Girl Scout Cookies
Edited on Sun Feb-22-04 01:59 PM by lunabush

Weird - Ya got yer Boy Scouts (who were smart enough to kick me out when I was 13), which at the corporate level support a homophobic philosophy.

In the Girls Scouts, you got you have an org at the heart that supports Planned Parenthood, teaches girls independence, And has been supportive of the union workers striking at the West Coast grocery chains.

Show the GS that you support their progressive stances and buy some cookies from the cute little gals selling them outside your supermarket or convenience store.

Here are your choices this year - vote for one!

(note that names vary by region - we sell All Abouts up here in MN, but I don't find them on the National site)

Peanut Butter Patties - Tagalongs

Caramel Delights - Samoas

Pinatas

Classic Shortbread

Thin Mints

Lemon Pastry Cremes - Reduced Fat

Peanut Butter Sandwiches - Do-si-dos

Animal Treasures

7. Yeah! The best!
They always have been my favorites, with the shortbread ones close behind. And yes, let's support the very progressive Girl Scouts.

4. Since when do samoas get shaped like hexagons?
Edited on Sun Feb-22-04 02:03 PM by HypnoToad
I bought 6 boxes, yet to arrive.

I noticed cost had gone up 50 cents per box. (that's okay, don't get me wrong!...)

They used to be round. Is this hexagonal gambit meant to cut costs?! Okay, it would take about the bits shaved off of 5 or 6 cookies to make one new cookie, but still! :silly:

And when will these cookies be made with real girl scouts? :9 Otherwise, isn't it misleading advertising? That's illegal. I smell a lawsuit coming...

9. I think it varies by region
From what I learned nabbing pics for the poll there are two bakeries that are contracted to do the work. Maybe they have their choice of how they do it. I know here in Minnesota last year our Samoas were Round - below LPFF sez they have always been Hex'd.

6 boxes? - mmmmmmm! Cookie party at Hypno Toad's house!

10. lunabush is right
There are two bakers, ABC and Little Brownie. Bakers are required to bake Thin Mints, Peanut Butter Sandwiches (Do-si-dos) and Trefoils (Shortbread). There are 5 additional kinds of cookies they can bake, but the names vary between the two bakers. I'm sure size and shape also vary :)

They've always been hexagonal when I've bought the Caramel Delights. Maybe they are hex'd and the Samoa versions are round.

11. Okay, that makes sense...
Edited on Sun Feb-22-04 02:19 PM by HypnoToad
I wonder if they'll be hex'd in Minnesota this year... the pictures of the Samoas on the sign-up sheet were round.

Uh-oh. That's misadvertising and that's not legal. Is it lawsuit time? </sarcasm>

Thanks for the edification! I never knew they used 2 separate bakeries... :9 GS cookies are rather popular...

Despite my earlier sarcasm, I dig the shape. Hexagons are rather cool looking and I love hexagonal shapes...

You're in Minnesota too? :yourock:

14. We had round Samoas
and I AM expecting round Samoas - Someone has some 'splaining to do if the are hex'd. Well, maybe it would be ok - as long as they taste ok.

Yep, Minnesota is home now. I live down the the R'puke dominated Rochester area.

5. And are you ever right!!
The Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts are unbelievably different. My dh, right out of college, worked for the Boy Scouts (he is an Eagle Scout) and it was a horrible job - 12 hours/day for shit wages. And the organization is totally anti-family too. They work their employees to death. We had been married for 3 weeks and he had to go to a 3 week training session in Dallas. I came along, paying my own way (returning wedding presents to do to) and BS management about had a fit. ('She's going to drag his career down!!' was one of the more laughable comments.)

As time went by in the training session, all the other (male) new hires were going to strip clubs and getting drunk and showing up hungover, and my dh showed up for meetings bright-eyed and wide awake. And he STILL got crap, because the other new hires were 'bonding' (albeit at strip clubs, which they didn't want to hear about).

He left after a year, and would never recommend them as employers.

Then, of course, the homophobe thing has proven to the world that the Boy Scouts are a bunch of first class assholes.

6. YIPES!
The homophobia thing is silly enough, but 12 hour days for horrid wages, etc... that is anti-family. Very anti-family.

That's it, you've got it spot-on! Dems are seen as anti-business. The Dems need to fight back by saying repukes are anti-family!!! We'd win everywhere, for real.

21. Not only are the BSA homophobic and anti-family
But they, at least at the higher level, are also very militaristic and anti-pacifism. They also hate anyone who doesn't believe in one God. It's pretty scary.

My troop at least had a very cool, liberal SM. He left when the folks above him got to him, and I took off with him. My favorite thing about him is that he refused to shop at WalMart because they drove out at least three dozen small businesses when they infected our community.

I've heard much better things about the Scout programs outside of the US. Yes, I say "Scout programs" because elsewhere, it's one organizatio and not segregated like it is here.

28. 2$ of the 3 stays in the local community
for troop stuff and area administration.

Of that, I know that my step daughter gets to keep 60 cents towards her girl scout camp this summer.

from the FAq

Where does the money go?
Two-thirds or more of the purchase price stays in the local community. Your Girl Scout Council uses cookie money to fund membership services, activities and other costs associated with making Girl Scouting available to girls in your area. In addition, troops and groups earn proceeds from the sale – and the girls themselves participate in deciding how the money will be spent.

It's seasonal.

Some of the proceeds go to the Girl Scouts. I like to freeze the real cookies anyway, but the ice cream is still mighty tasty.
