The BlueIris Semi-Nightly Poetry Break, 7/16/08
Edited on Wed Jul-16-08 03:33 PM by BlueIris
"Caesarian"

That's the trouble with these babies now;
They take one look at that hot, wet hole
And hear the traffic, and the screaming beyond,
Even only for a taxi, and they try
To climb right back up again.

A father adds up the cost already,
He is showing pennies and cents
To a dilated vagina and hoping
The kid can count.

With its feet on either side
Of its mother's gaping manhole
And with the nurses beckoning, the child
Is hanging onto the placenta
Pretending to grow there.

Until, suddenly, the door opens.
Not the trapdoor with the head-clamps,
But the side door, with the hip-hinges.
And it all begins.

—Frieda Hughes

3. I think Hughes is a surprisingly good poet.
I expected her work to be derivative or silly; it's neither. Highly original and a joy to read.

5. So, why do you think the Loungers are ignoring our poetry threads of late?
Edited on Wed Jul-16-08 06:15 PM by BlueIris
Are we not salacious enough or something?

6. Well, I know *some* DU'ers are doing it on purpose
sore feelings and all...

petty, but hey. To each his/her own.

Else, just overload perhaps?

Maybe I'll start a thread...

7. I like it.
I think it's hit-or-miss...a lot of people won't comment on a poem unless it really resonates with them, for fear of sounding "dumb".

Me? I don't care if I sound dumb.

8. My dear BlueIris...
I'm sorry I haven't been around much for the last couple of days..

It has been very difficult what with Khash's death and all...

Anyway...

This is certainly interesting...

Sounds like that baby is really smart...it doesn't want to get born!

Cool poem!

Thank you...

9. I have rarely ever seen a poem that successfully makes
a Caesarian delivery funny. :)

It's odd that there is no presence of the mother in this poem. The baby and father have exagerated presence, but where's the mom?

I'd bet that Frieda Hughes has a good sense of humor in many of her poems. You don't right something this snooth and funny unless that humor is a real part of you. :)
