Poll question: Why do you NOT reply to the Poetry Threads?
Just wondering. Used to get 20, 30, 40 replies sometimes.

now, lucky to get just one or two.

So, what's up with that?

4. Poetry just doesn't do much for me
I've tried. I'd prefer a very short story. So, I don't click the threads anymore, the logic being that yet another view without a comment is worse than one less view. That's how I feel about my threads anyway.

Nothing personal.

85. I don't know.
I could learn to like poetry. I like Pushkin. And I guess I like Shakespeare, but the reason I like Shakespeare is for the mystery that surrounds him and I like that time period. And to tell you the truth I don't think I've ever seen a French tapestry. I was just being a smart ass. :P :hi:

7. I always check out your poetry thread.
If not to at least try to determine the theme of the poem.
I confess that I don't always read them, but I try to comment when I do and if the poem speaks to me.
You could maybe try to mix it up with more humorous poems? or hell throw a rhyming one in there. Comedy sells.
Maybe pick one day a week. "The (insert your name) midweek fun/ slacker poem ?"
Shit the last thread I started got 3 replies(2 of them from me). It's pretty rough out there these days..:eyes: :dunce:

20. The fable of the Bear the Monkey and the Pig
A bear who barely earned
a living with his dancing
a two step was rehearsing
and rehearsing poorly

Wanting to seem worldly,
the bear asked a monkey
to render an opinion
the sage monkey replied
you dance very poorly

I think, the bear replied,
you do me a disfavor
have I no grace in dancing?
have I no rhythm at all?

A pig who watched the dance
said, Bravo! Well Done!
I've never seen such dancing
nor will I see it ever again!

Hearing this, the bear
added up the pros and cons
and with a modest bow,
had to exclaim thus:

When the monkey disapproved,
I had my doubts
but now that the pig praises,
my dance must really suck

Moral: Nothing is more damaging to reputation, than praise from idiots.

So don't ask me, I'm just a pig....

22. Let's try this short poem by Sheenagh Pugh
Edited on Wed Jul-16-08 07:28 PM by zanne

Sometimes things don't go, after all
from bad to worse. Some years, muscadel
faces down frost; green thrives; the crops don't fail.
Sometimes a man aims high, and all goes well.

A people sometimes will step back from war
elect an honest man, decide they care
enough, that they can't leave some stranger poor.
Some men become what they were born for.

Sometimes our best intentions do not go
amiss: sometimes we do as we meant to.
The sun will sometimes melt a field of sorrow
that seemed hard frozen; may it happen for you.

24. I'm afraid
I'm scared of sounding dumb, I read a lot at DU that I won't comment on because I'm scared of making people mad or looking idiotic.
Also I understand poetry a lot better when it's read out loud, I have reading problems.

I'm jealous of poets. Also I'm too scared to try writing. My grandmother was a Poet though, with a capital P :D

There was a story on the news today about troubled kids being rescued from juvie and taught to write poetry. And it seemed so simple for them and they felt good about it and were proud to read their work. They were brave.

Really. If it's more than two Ogden Nash stanzas I glaze over. I've tried and tried. If I come to poetry or even song lyrics in a novel I'm reading, I usually just hydroplane right over them.

65. DU moves very quickly, and poetry can take a while to digest.
I read every poetry thread and always make a mental note to return to the poem I've just read after I've thought about it a bit. Most times, though, life intervenes and I don't have time to get back to the thread with a reply.

I do, though, very much appreciate the time and heart you and BlueIris put into the poetry threads. You guys rock.

Usually I comment on the ones that reach out and get me. I could comment on more but I usually assume that what I have to say isn't all that interesting. :)

not even rhymed with "coliseum"! :P

Actually, I have been on a poetry kick of late, driven by this fine site by a former DUer:

Finished the second draft recently, and I hope to have the final product done by the end of the year. I'm debating whether to continue working on the new draft or doing that and working on the new book at the same time.

92. Just not into it
And it seems like therapy for the person who writes it, and I'm just not there to deal with another person's intense personal dramady in this particular format. I like to support my friends, but I like to do it in simple, straightforward language, not in verses and rhymes where I have to decode the meaning...

But that's just me, I like it straight up.

103. well then, here ya go
I wrote this, so don't no one go stealin' it as their own. You hear me, lurkers?

A gray cat named Charley McNab
Took a trip to the Chesapeake by cab
He wound up in Waldorf
And lived on a small wharf
And spent his days fishing for crab.

(Yeah, I know, Waldorf is land-bound. Don't bug me with geographical details.)

108. I'll keep that in mind.
I tend to not like to say something unless I feel like I really have something to contribute (online anyway).

I'm also really opinionated, and I often feel like the internet is too limiting, and that I will inadvertently upset someone, so I'm really careful about how I word things. (I've rewritten this 3 times, as an example.)

Living with a poet, and then spending a semester in a class with a prof who's readings were inspiring, i 'get' poetry a lot more than i had previously.

I may not always comment, but i do always read...

112. Sturgeon's Law
(This is no comment on your particular artistic ability)

While there's a special joy in discovering a nugget of gold on my own, I've found that there is so much art, of all kinds, out there that I can spend the rest of my life appreciating works recommended by friends and critics I know.

The internet is a giant, unfiltered time-sucker that will eat your life if you're not careful.

116. RL - Unless I'm crazy busy, I check out your poetry thread every day and usually
say 'hi.' Usually, poems that move me in some way get a comment, while the ones that leave me flat
don't.

Keep doing it, though. You never know when someone may read a poem that will change his/her life.
