1. what a sweet face
Does Gridley have different colored eyes, or is that just the flash?

My big fat orange tabby Keiko outweighs Gridley by about five pounds. He's twelve years old. I love him dearly.

MCs are one of the more popular breeds, so it's not hard to find them up for adoption. They're big babies; they love to snuggle and are very laid back and loyal. Excellent family pets or a good first cat for a dog lover (I used to be strictly a dog person myself).

35. Yep! He was an impulse buy, I'm ashamed to say
I went to a cat show with the intent of adopting a Turkish Angora (a very rare breed that you don't normally find up for adoption-but a rescuer had two there). The cat I had my eyes on just didn't feel right to me; he was going to be a companion for my elderly tuxedo boy, who was grieving the loss of his half Turkish Angora best friend. While I was waiting for the woman from the rescue organization to return from lunch little kitten Oberon kept reaching out of his cage and pawing at me. There was no sign on the cage as to what he was, but I just had a gut feeling that he would be the right kitty to help my old Miro recover from his grief and start eating again. I was right, too! But man, I NEVER thought that he would get to be so HUGE! I knew nothing about Maine Coons and had figured that since he was sold as a discounted "pet quality" kitten he was a runt or some such. Guess not!

Kitty love:

17. Chaucer is 16 pounds and his vet says he's not overweight.
She did say not to let him get much bigger, but that he is still an acceptable body weight for his size. He has a really large frame for a cat and if he's standing on his hind feet at the scratching post he's got to be every bit of three feet long.

He is a big old sweetie that loves to play and he insists on thundering to the front door when we come home.

I'm sorry, I am not on a home computer so I have no pics to post. Think huge and black with orange eyes.

The running joke at our house is, "He's not fat he's just big boned."

19. Big Cat, Little Cat
Brianna, the Sport Utility Cat

Pippy, a snazzy subcompact

Bri is part Maine Coon, so she's about 13 feet long (ok, I'm exaggerating a little). She's mostly fluff, but has those humongous paws. Pip is a little cat with a big attitude. She struts around like she owns the place, but she's really a sweet cat when she lets her guard down.

38. Has he had his thyroid checked?
if he were 19 or 20 I'd expect him to be getting a little thin, but 11 or 12 is a bit young. My beloved Peewee died of heart disease that was pushed into overdrive by thyroid disease, which couldn't be controlled because of kidney problems! If the thyroid problems were caught earlier he may still be with me.

I later found out that most cats can live into their 20s on a good diet, but the commercial pet foods that most people feed to their pets often cause kidney failure and cancer, which means that most cats in the US rarely make it past 16. I had been feeding Peewee Friskies and Fancy Feast, but then switched him to Science diet thinking that it was better for him. Nope, it's as bad as the other stuff. My pet sitter sent me this article: http://www.api4animals.org/facts.php?p=359&more=1 and I think the change to USDA human grade foods saved the life of my remaining cat and have kept my new ones in excellent health.

I have a real soft spot for blue kitties like Tonka. Two of my favorite fosters were blues, and fortunately they both found wonderful forever homes!

We took him for a checkup a few months ago and everything seemed okay but I'm gonna ask them to check that next time!

The vets told us to use Science diet so we have been but then I saw that site too :(

I've been feeding Tonka raw chicken almost every day, just a tiny bit, and he LOVES it! I'm hoping it will help him live a little longer He's the most affectionate cat I've ever had, I need him to be here a few more years.

45. There's a frozen raw food diet called Prairie Nature's Variety
http://www.naturesvariety.com/raw_products_chicken if your kitty likes raw chicken he'll probably love it. I've met people with 24 year old cats that swear by raw diets-but they MUST include natural taurine from organ meat, and sometimes even a taurine supplement (Google taurine ad cats for more on feline taurine requirements). I really wish that my cats loved the frozen raw-my neighbor's cat does, but mine only go for the freeze dried raw diet, which means that I need to ensure that they drink enough (not always easy). I'll bet that Tonka would love it though since he already likes raw chicken treats, and I'm sure that you would see a big change in him after just a month or two. Just compare the ingredient list on the website to the Science Diet you have at home, and you'll see why.

Best of luck to you and Tonka!

I'll certainly defer to the owners re: health. I just couldn't help noticing that they seem, as a group, quite a bit heavier than the cats I've known. Of course, the camera adds ten pounds, too, so it may be hard to tell online. O8)

I was just wondering if the heavier ones are inside all the time, since most of the (slim) cats I've known have had access to outside.

66. my three younger boys packed on some weight after we started keeping them IN
100% of the time. They no longer climb trees, stalk the fenceline, walk the block terrorizing birds, geckos, other kitties and various rodents. One of mine used to get on the roof and patrol for squirrels. My daughter called them the Cat Mafia..three big kitties stomping around the 'hood looking for a rumble.

So age, and different activity levels have conspired to put weight on them. However my elder cat did not put on weight when he came in permanently. I think that is an age thing. He eats well though and I give him a special private small can of kitty food in the evenings all alone behind a closed door to prevent pilfering.

One thing with this particular thread though...it started as 'how big is your cat?' which would naturally bring out those of us with HUGH!!!!11 kitties immediately.

Many of these kitties are strictly indoor residents, like mine.

Discussions of in vs out vs some of each quickly degenerate into flamewars too.

I am sure we had one of those at our old neighborhood. Our tiniest little scrapper used to take on bruisers three times his size and win. We lived in a rural area then, so it was easier for them to be outside. Lewis and Clark are stunning. I am loving this thread of substantial kitties!

Yes, some of the flamewars around here are a real Twilight Zone experience. DU is an interesting group of people, for sure.

it is usually best not to leap to hostile interpretations. You can make yourself very unhappy and defensive that way, for no reason.

I love kitties, and I don't get emotional about their size, I promise. :) As for making any conclusions about their owners, I can assure you that whatever you interpreted came from your own remarkable mind, not mine.

With no malice or sarcasm whatsoever, I do hope you feel better tomorrow.

53. I have a really copy-cat thread for this...
But I'd be tombstoned in a New York Minute.

and handsome adult Quinn.

No flies on Althea either, BTW

I love Quinn

I think my fave DU kitties are Oberon, Quinn, TWAEBGNG and the new Queen of DU kitties: MO

other than my own of course.

however Kittimus Prime is a real up and comer.

71. Trying this photo-posting thing...

Sprout is about 11 pounds and Squeaker is closer to 10. They're 7 years old, and their brothers (who live with my partner's mom) are significantly larger than they are, though all of a pretty healthy size for their frames. They get a good bit of activity chasing each other around, and that will increase when we move into our new place (stairs will provide a bit of extra exercise for all of us).
