Mondale in 1984, Dukakis in 1988, the Democrats in 1994. I would like to avoid that again.

He had to drive to the next town to get help while his father helped the wounded.
Just being literal. :)

11. I didn't actually see a train wreck. |
|
But I heard one. Lying in bed one night, I heard an enormous BOOM!! A train had derailed about 1/4 mile from my house. Very loud noise. Luckily no serious injuries, and no toxic chemicals spilled, but real loud!!

13. Well, the problem with train wrecks |
|
is that you generally see that they are going to happen long before they do. Nothing you can do except stand there and wait for the crash.

15. yes - the police gave kids bags - got 10 cents per body part |
|
train hit truck full of folks -
I refused - a wimp
The corner had removed bodies/parts - so I think cops were having a bit of fun.

in the 40's
I think it was a wierd cop sense of humor - but the guy handed out bags and a half doz 9-11 yr walked the tracks about 1/2 mile from the high school - when I got there the train and truck and bodies were gone - just the cop playing his "joke". One of the kids stuck in my memory as I lost a bet with him - he did have 6 toes on each foot. I was visiting an Aunt.
I left

17. OOH, I was right next to one a few years ago |
|
I was at a friends business which was right across the street from one of the states main north/south rail lines. We didn't pay attention at first when the train came up because we were so used to hearing them pass, but when we heard an "explosion" that literally shook the building, we both ran outside.
The nearly mile-long freight train had jumped the track about 1/4 of a mile away and was STILL throwing cars off the tracks as the inertia of the rear cars continued pushing ahead. One of the last cars to jump the track did so less than 50 feet from where we were standing. It was never a major story, but I'm sure that there's something on the Internet about it (it was a 25 car derailment in Ceres California in 1997 or 1998).
To be honest, they're REALLY loud, but not all that interesting to watch...no fireballs, explosions, sparks, or anything like that. Twenty-five cars jumped the track that day, but aside from a few at the very front that were crushed or torn apart, most of them just fell over on their sides.
I cannot emphasize how LOUD derailments are though..."BOOM" just doesn't do it justice.

and that was pretty scary, especially when the propane tank got to a certain temperature.
I'm talking about those huge propane tanks that are in the yard if you have propane heat. They have a valve to let off some propane whenever the pressure inside gets too high, and every time it let off some propane, there would be a big flash of fire, like a giant lighter. The fire was at night, making it all more dramatic. And we lived across the street, making it all too close for comfort.
:scared:
Edit: Oh, yeah, fires are LOUD, too. Lots of roaring, more so when the gas is lit.

...and the explosion of a 500 lb bomb that hit a marketplace crowded with civilians...
...and, a bit more uplifting - 10 tons of food, dropping out of the back of a transport plane from 1500 ft...
