I just got my first taste of Windows Vista.
I'm not sure, but I think I hate it.

1. Because it doesn't work properly, or because you just don't like the way it works?
I'm curious, since I'm planning on getting a new PC soon and I want to know whether I should just accept that Vista is the next thing, or if I should fight and make sure I keep XP. :P

2. It's just...different.
Very pretty compared to XP, but lots of nagging security pop ups whenever you try to install or uninstall a program, access windows services, or do any darn thing.

I'm the boss of this here computer, gosh darn it!

I'm still in shock - I went from XP home with SP 1 to...this.

I'm actually planning on playing around with Vista for a while, then installing some flavor of Linux.

XP seems much more straightforward to use.

My advice - fight! :P

5. Thanks, Betty88. I'm passing this along to my husband. He has been totally immersed in tweaking
via the Registry and chats with Microsoft since purchasing a new machine a month or so ago.

Believe me, I have never heard such a string of epithets coming from the next desk. By the way, he is a software engineer and analyst (retired). Security issues are unimportant to us. My former employer from 1983 to 1992 just advised me that my personal information was compromised by the robbery of some disk somewhere. They gave me the chance to get my credit profile updated. I can't be bothered with this crap. If I have a problem, I'll take care of it IF and WHEN it happens.

My machine (which is his old one) is plenty good enough and will he has advised me to stay with XP until I find something more user friendly. I don't have the time or inclination to get involved with all the companies he has contacted regarding instability of this OP as well as conflicts with programs he has been using for years.

Appreciate your post, and thanks for the tip about www.blackviper.com .

10. your welcome and
wish your husband luck for me. I just built Jumptheshadow a new computer for her birthday and have been having fun learning my way around Vista for the last two weeks. A friend at work turned me on to that site and it has been a great help. I enjoy the tweaking also, I think strings of epithets are a requirement when messing with a new OS.

BTW check out Blackvipers kitty pics...

8. You're the boss until malware creeps in -- that's when UAC comes in handy
BTW: Linux isn't all that different from Vista in terms of restrictions... ;)

7. Powerbook and VMware fusion.
no dual boot, runs any windows program native (word, outlook, whatever), and you can make a bootable image of any computer you own.

I use this to keep images of customers plc (network attach only, no external attached) controllers. Great system.

Vista is a shitty os, I can use it but do not like it.

9. Or stick with XP, save the $1500 for that PB plus $200 for VM and get on with life.
Edited on Sun Jul-20-08 10:40 AM by HypnoToad
If the OP doesn't want to fart around with details, Linux and OS X aren't going to be any better - emulators or logging in as root to do jack gets tedious after time too. :7

12. Unix OS has its uses
but I have a pretty specific reason to use it. XP is a good os. I boot XP image most often.

Most people never shell out OSx, dont need to. It is really stable and works for what most people need to do.

Yes it is more expensive. I have run GSX on intel but Fusion does a good job on the "desktop".

I like the VM option because I can run windows stuff native (macs use intel chipset) and it is very clean on osx.

Again just my opinion. If they were looking to save cash, not the way to go.
