Luckily, I don't drive a lot, so I only have to fill up about every 2 to 3 weeks.
I do intend to get a more practical car, but I figure I'll drive this one to death first.

I know you're "Mr Bicycle Extremist Man", but some of us have kids, illnesses, disabilities, etc that require that we use a car on occasion if we want to hold a job, get to the doctor, and live our lives. With no public transportation options, we pay what we must, not what we're "willing".

Few of the "ride a bike" brigade spare a thought for those of us physically unable to do so. The same goes for public transportation, which requires people to be physically able to get to and from the station and on and off the bus/train/whatever. I guess in the brave new world envisioned by the "alternative" transportation fans, people like me would just stay home and starve. The truth is, in a world where fuel prices became too high to afford, I would no longer be able to work.
So, theres my "choice": pay the fuel extortion or die.

27. In taterguy's defense, he is an avid cyclist. |
|
And I would guess what he's implying is that there is a supply and demand element to our gas prices, both within and outside of the US. Maybe one person's tank of gas wouldn't effect the marginal demand of gas, but high gas prices would likely force many to consider other forms of transportation that are not as carbon-emitting, such as electric cars, cycling (if possible) and mass transportation. Also, because of the dramatic decline in demand for SUV's, auto makers are now forced to manufacture more fuel-efficient and alternate energy vehicles. There is an upside to all of this.

I put 20.00 in the xterra every week whether or not it needs it, it gets me just below 1/4 tank, which what I consume during the week driving to/from work/store/etc. I don't drive very much.

49. You probably don't want to be filling up right now |
|
The direction of gas prices is down, based on trading prices plummeting last week. The key is the price per gallon, not price per barrel. But the downturn hasn't hit the pumps yet.
My strategy is basic: Fill up at the lowest available price when the direction is rapid up but before the adjustment has hit the pumps, and bit by bit when the direction is down.
Of course, who knows what the speculators will brainstorm to react to this week.
