Question about car commercials. How long has this been going on?
I've noticed lately that a lot of car commercials crow that you drive X miles on a single tank of gas. Of course, they don't usually say how big the tank is or how many miles per gallon you can expect. The obvious intent is to make it seem that filling your Explorer will be a money-saving investment because you can drive all the way across town and back, or something.

When did this trend in commercials start? I've seen it for at least several different makes of car, but I can't remember the first time I encountered it...

1. Probably when people realized that $4.00 a gallon of gas
Makes SUV's too expensive to be a family vehicle.

2. What trend? The trend of selective fact-giving to trick you into buying a car?
I think that predates cars and commercials.

3. In 1941 Nash offered the "600" model
it promised 600 miles per 20 gallon tank,or 30 mpg.
