Cilantro: Yes or No?
I was just thinking about cilantro today and was wondering how many people like it and how many hate it. Me? I personally find it tastes like soap, but can handle tiny amounts in salsa and Indian or Thai food. I just got overpowered by the stuff when I lived in Taiwan and would order soup at a street stall and they piled the shit on.

What are your thoughts?

4. It does have a "distinctive" flavor but I like it and it HAS to be in some foods.
I dislike biting into whole seeds when using them in foods, however. :puke:

7. I'd bathe in the stuff if I could!
I ADORE cilantro! :9 :9 :9 :9

When I was at Whole Foods a couple of hours ago, they had a chicken in tomato sauce for taco fillings on their take away bar. But that's not the fun part. There was a WHOLE PANFUL of chopped cilantro to put on top! Of course, I loaded up by the tablespoonful. :9 :9

Belongs in the trash just like cumin.

16. I think that it is decent
Cilantro tasting like soap is a genetic thing. Not suprisingly, cilantro doesn't taste like soap to most people of Asian descent. I'm not of Asian descent, but it doesn't taste like soap to me either.

61. It's very much genetic.
Some people are what's called "supertasters": to them certain foods are painfully bitter/spicy. They actually have more than the usual number of taste buds. Me? I'm obviously not one! I adore cilantro, licorice, espresso, pickled herring, camembert and Vindaloo masala. My son is just as obviously the opposite - his favorite flavor is "white". It made for an uncomfortable childhood, when I made spaghetti sauce from scratch with fresh basil and spicy sausage, and he wanted Chef Boyardee.

19. I Love it. One of the things I never used before I moved to Texas, that now is
an indispensable part of my culinary routine.

I make salsa
I put it in my homemade chili
I use it in black bean soup
I use it in taco soup
I put it in my curried lentils and other curry dishes

it is a frequent ingredient in Weight Watchers recipes for casseroles, soups and dips.

name just because some ignorant yuppie scum can't pronounce the old one.

Of course you can handle it in small amounts because it's CORIANDER, and it's an herb, not an ingredient!

Here ya go...

Gawd, now ya got me thinking of basil salad or parsely soup... GAACK!)

37. How it tastes to you is governed by genetics.
To me, it tastes like chlorine.
Like when you got swimming pool water up your nose.
To many it has a peppery, minty taste.

I keep a pot on the patio in case I run across a recipe that uses it. It self-seeds, so it comes back every year. I really don't care for the smell of it, though.

People are so different in which herbs taste good to them, though - for me, even the teeenist bit of fennel or anise can make even the otherwise-yummiest dish inedible. :puke:
