If you were making a disc of Joni Mitchell tunes for a friend...
...what would you put on it?

There's so much...it's hard to know where to start.

1. Well, the most obvious is probably Big Yellow Taxi ...
I'd think Chelsea Morning, as well. (BTW, that was the song Chelsea Clinton was named after.)

8. Yes, they paved paradise and put up a parking lot!
I was chasing down some stuff by R. Crumb when I stumbled upon 'A Short History of America' by R. Crumb and Joni Mitchell. Quintessential Crumb and Mitchell material.

15. A few of my favorites are
Morning Morgantown, Ladies of the Canyon, Conversation, Coyote, Carey, For Free, Car on A Hill, Down to You, The Circle Game and A Case of You. Those last two for sure!

She's so awesome. It's really tough to choose. The only one I simply can't listen to, and it used to be a favorite when I was much younger is Raised on Robbery. Sounds so cheesy now that I just can't listen to it.

Good luck. :hi:

Joni always has a sentimental place
in my heart with my best friend since high school. Our lives after high school had Joni playing in the background most of the time, during the quiet, sane times, anyway. LOL

Ladies of the Canyon were a group of us who were tight through high school. Hippie artists, all. Circle Game is a favorite lullaby I used to sing to a friend's baby.

19. cold blue steel and sweet fire
Edited on Mon Jul-21-08 10:07 PM by MullenBank
One eye for the beat police
Sweet Fire calling
"You can't deny me
Now you know what you need"
Underneath the jungle gym
Hollow-grey-fire-escape-thief
Looking for Sweet Fire
Shadow of Lady Release
"Come with me
I know the way" she says
"It's down, down, down the dark ladder
Do you want to contact somebody first
Leave someone a letter
You can come now
Or you can come later"

A wristwatch, a ring, a downstairs screamer
Edgy-black cracks of the sky
"Pin-cushion-prick-
Fix this poor bad dreamer!"
"Money" cold shadows reply
Pawnshops crisscrossed and padlocked
Corridors spit on prayers and pleas
Sparks fly up from Sweet Fire
Black soot of Lady Release
"Come with me
I know the way" she says
"It's down, down, down the dark ladder
Do you want to contact somebody first
Does it really matter
If you come now
Or if you come on later?"

Red water in the bathroom sink
Fever and the scum brown bowl
Blue Steel still begging
But it's indistinct
Someone's Hi-Fi drumming Jelly Roll
Concrete concentration camp
Bashing in veins for peace
Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire
Fall into Lady Release
"Come with me I know the way" she says
"It's down, down, down the dark ladder
Do you want to contact somebody first
I mean what does it really matter
You're going to come now
Or you're going to come later"

33. This one...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSb74ALvXco

Fly silly seabird
No dreams can possess you
No voices can blame you
For sun on your wings
My gentle relations
Have names they must call me
For loving the freedom
Of all flying things
My dreams with the seagulls fly
Out of reach out of cry

I came to the city
And lived like old Crusoe
On an island of noise
In a cobblestone sea
And the beaches were concrete
And the stars paid a light bill
And the blossoms hung false
On their store window trees
My dreams with the seagulls fly
Out of reach out of cry

Out of the city
And down to the seaside
To sun on my shoulders
And wind in my hair
But sandcastles crumble
And hunger is human
And humans are hungry
For worlds they can't share
My dreams with the seagulls fly
Out of reach out of cry

I call to a seagull
Who dives to the waters
And catches his silver-fine
Dinner alone
Crying where are the footprints
That danced on these beaches
And the hands that cast wishes
That sunk like a stone
My dreams with the seagulls fly
Out of reach Out of cry

43. She's not a fan, and my intention with this disc is to change her mind
Which stuff do you consider weird? She blames "Mingus" and "Hejira" for ruining her career (even though she's extraordinarily proud - and rightfully so - of both). Personally, I am a non-fan of "Chalkmark In A Rainstorm" but like and/or love much of the rest of her output.

I LOVE the covers she did for those two compilations!
