If you could pick a place to live, where would it be?

Me?

I live in San Diego. I grew up here (for the most part) I love it here.

BUT - I have travelled a lot. I have lived other places.

If I could pick... (I consider my family when doing this - I have 2 kids who are going into the 3rd and 4th grade.)

I pick -

(1) The Big Island of Hawaii - I want a view that never stops and to breath the Pacific air. I love tha Hawaiian people, the culture and the beauty.

(2) The mountains of Colorado. I love the views and the magic of the mountains.

(3) Spain. I have spent many summers there. It is perfection. The food, the people, the culture, the sea, the art the music... I love it.

I can only pick from amongst the places I have been. Maybe Hawaii or someplace is better, but for all around lifestyle quality in a place that would be somewhat affordable I think Charleston is about the perfect place.

9. I lived on the lower east side years ago

and I regret ever leaving there. I wish I had stayed there and figured out a way to just get rid of my husband. But life has come and gone, and I can't afford the NYC prices now. If I had the money to live anywhere I wanted, it would be probably Brooklyn, somewhere out west where I could look at an open landscape or mountains, the place where Brad Pitt and Angelina Joile are now living in France (ha, I said if I had the money to live anywhere), or a private island where only I could decide who came and went. Of course, in the last two choices I would need servants to carry out my every wish. Who am I kidding, I would need someone to take care of me where ever I lived, but if I had the money that would not be a problem. ;)

Oh, Dominican Republic would be okay also if I had the choice of where I would live and again had lots of money and a private doctor.

6. I would pick southern West Virginia

Out in the country. I've been around but there's no place I'd rather be than right here where I've lived my whole life.

San Diego, San Francisco, and Protland, Oregon are all wonderful but the cost of living would put me in the poorhouse. Whenever I've been to New Orleans I've felt like they built the whole place just for me. Wow, what a great town!

West of Calgary, Canada out toward Banff is beautiful. It would be great to live there or in Quebec if every month were August. Phoenix would be a wonderful place to live if every month were February.

10. Berkeley, California

I was born and grew up there. I go back again every few years to visit family, and it's still as vibrant as ever. The traffic is getting horrible, however, despite having a great public transportation system, and the housing costs are obscene.

It would still be one of my two first choices, though, along with San Francisco.

However, can't afford them. :( I'm happy to be in Portland, though. We love it here.

(Have you been to the Cal campus lately? I can't believe how much building has gone on there since the mid-80s when I was there. I'm afraid they're just packing too many buildings in a small space.)

34. It rains

a lot. I mean when it isn't raining, it's really just waiting to rain. BUT on the three days it isn't raining, the colors are more intense and everything sparkles. The greens are like emeralds and the reds are the color of pigeon blood rubies. It is a fine place if you like wearing sweaters and rain coats.

But then, you love in Seattle!

Or go the whole other way and live simply in Northern/Western Maine. Either North Woods or more west to that bit of White Mountains that reach into Maine.

I think I'd like Alaska but I've never even visited there so I'm probably not being logical there.

I think at some point I will move to Northern Maine, so I'm pretty fortunate that I'm living now in a place I like (and I've traveled pretty widely in the US and a few European spots) and may be able to move to another favorite spot.

Due to Sulphur Dioxide from the recent volcanic activity that's been going on for the past several months.

and the cloud from the vapor, for the most part, blows right out to sea.

The activity has been going on for years. I think since 1986???

BUT you are correct to want to stay off the Kona coast area because the vapor does build up there. And it is nasty.

43. The vog from the volcano goes out to sea,

rounds South Point and then come back and hits Kona. The entire islands weather patterns are also affected by the vog haze. I have met oldtimers who said that back in the '70s the skies were really blue and clear, not so much today.

Kīlauea has been going off since the '80s or so at several spots on the coast and at Pu'u O'o vent, but recently the Halema'uma'u crater with Kīlauea caldera has been emitting fumes and sulfur dioxide and they have had to close the park as recently as a month ago, friends of mine who live there are telling me that the vog is horrible and that people with respiratory problems have had to leave the island, this all has happened with the past several months.
