Help, Computer Geeks!
I've had a "bad computer week". Long story short: My computer kept freezing up. Reinstalled Windows 98. Renamed Windows to "Win98". Reinstalled Windows 98 again. Computer up and running...great, huh?

Except all my Desktop icons disappeared, save for the ones that came with the computer. Found "Quicken 2002" after searching in "Find Files/Folders". But it says it's missing a ".DLL" file.

I NEVER ran the "quick restore" disks. I NEVER reformatted my hard drive.

Bottom line: Can I get my software up and running? (I think I've thrown away most of the installation disks - doh!)

Thx in advance...

1. I am NOT the person to ask
But, I had the same error message a couple months ago. Eventually I broke down and installed Windows XP instead of paying to get the damn thing fixed. So if someone DOES have the answer to this, I would be interested in finding out what I COULD have done!

2. Just out of sheer morbid curiousity
Which .DLL file did it say was missing?

7. Well... it probably means you need to reinstall Quicken
Just a quick google search gave me this

http://www.intuit.com/support/quicken/2004/win/7202.html

But if you don't have the disks, you might be hosed..

Something else you COULD try (if you think it's hosed anyway and feel like "what the heck")

Check and see if the file is in your "C:\WINDOWS\system32\" directory.. if so go to your start window and then go to "Run" and type this in without the quotes "regsvr32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\IPROF32.DLL"

That will re-register the DLL, however my feeling is it may bring out deeper issues.

Sorry I couldn't do more for you.

4. Reinstall Quicken
Edited on Mon Feb-23-04 03:29 AM by kgfnally
on top of your clean install; that will put all the necessary .dll files into their proper directories. If you don't have the install discs, I'm afraid you're SOL unless you borrow or buy it. BTW, you should always format your hard drive when you install an operating system, unless you have a dual boot into WinX and Linux or something.

You'll have fewer problems in the long run if you format, install the OS, update it, secure it, and then install your applications and games, in that order.

edit: As for your desktop icons and shortcuts, I know of no way to 'get those back'. If you originally installed all of them in their default locations on the hard drive (as opposed to creating a folder for the program yourself), then simply reinstall them. Dead shortcuts may be on your start menu; use those as a guide for which programs to reinstall.

Good luck!

8. Suggestion for next time
Before you install Windows, create a 5-10gb partition for Windows only. You can do this by starting the computer with your Windows98 CD and typing "fdisk" at the command prompt. Install Windows and its critical components (Office, viruscan) on the primary c: part, and all your other programs/data on the extended part, which will likely be labeled d:. That way the next time Windows decides to hose itself, you'll be able to reinstall it with minimal data loss.

9. You can get the dll file here and install it into your dll folder
That might work but usually more than one file is missing, this is just the beginning.
