Bill Hicks: Why the fuss, exactly?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/3513475.stm

Bill Hicks - the anti-war, pro-smoking, corporate-bashing American comedian - died 10 years ago this week. What is it about his work that has meant his reputation has grown and grown?

Just found this on the BBC site this morning. I know there are at least a few Bill Hicks fans around here. Enjoy.

1. I'm pretty cynical at times, but Hicks made me look happy-go-lucky.
At the same time, he made me laugh my ass off.

He'd be having a field day with the Bush* crowd. I bet they'd have locked him up by now...

2. he was unique
He pushed the limit on acceptable comedy and had a great delivery too. Not too many Southern comics with this kind of material.

3. He was a prophet in the truist sense of thew word, and was hilarious
Bitingly clever and sophisticated humor, pointed ability to observe the truth and be prophetic about the world and life.

His comedy was more preaching than just humor.

And he was brilliant, had a well-timed delivery, and knew how to string words together.

An artist he was, and I miss him.

4. He was the truest heir to the mantle of Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor.
A genius, he was, by any definition of the term.
