Do you like Huey Lewis and The News?
Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercial and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

3. In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album.
I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

9. Do you like Phil Collins?
Edited on Thu Jul-24-08 08:01 PM by Blue-Jay
I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Sabrina, why don't you, uh, dance a little. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

12. No, I don't care much for Phil...
A bit too commerical for me.

I like pre-Collins Genesis and I do like Peter Gabriel's music more than Phil's.
That's just my humble opinion tho...

42. it may have been from you that I first saw that video

If it was, thank you very much - it totally kicks ass, as do the others from that TV show. These videos make me not upset that Gabriel isn't doing the Genesis reunion - they would never be this good now. It's kind of amazing that Phil Collins was once one cool dude, and now... Gabriel has obviously always been a wanker, but he was once an awesome wanker, and now he's just an old fart wanker.

28. And since the OP mentioned a comparison between Huey and Elvis Costello
In a bizzare twist, the band on Elvis Costello's first album "My Aim is True" is not The Attractions, who did not yet exist, but actually Clover. Minus Huey, of course.

50. Truly a small world, I did not know that
By the time Elvis Costello blew onto the scene I had mostly turned a deaf ear to contemporary music coming out; the late seventies were tumultuous years for me.

With a little help from Google™ I discovered a gig that might have been worth seeing. I really enjoy the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco:

Elvis Costello To Perform MAIT Live With Clover

Elvis will be performing his debut album My Aim Is True in its entirety next month at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall. He’ll be accompanied by the band that backed him up while recording that album in 1977, Mill Valley’s own Clover.

At the time of the MAIT sessions, Clover consisted of:
Alex Call, John McFee - Guitar, Vocals
John Ciambotti - Bass
Sean Hopper - Keyboards, Vocal
Huey Lewis - Harmonica, Vocal (not featured on MAIT)
Micky Shine - Drums, Vocals

Elvis Costello with Clover Performing My Aim Is True
When: November 8 at 7:00pm and 10:00pm (2007)
Where: San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall
Tickets: On Sale October 7, 2007 (Early Show, Late Show)

The show will be a benefit for the Richard deLone Special Housing Fund. For tickets and more info go here.

55. That one was given to him in 1970
He played it a bit and didn't like it. In so many words, he said it was a shitty guitar. It might have been a Deal because there were a few floating around in the music scene by then. Crap, Charlie even had a patent on the guitar by then.

Damn, I must have heard this song a few hundred times in the last 20-however many years since it was released. Always figured the lyrics were some metaphorical reference to love gone bad or the typical shit like that.

But as Huey makes it clear in the intro here, it was about something far more serious.........

39. They were the house band at a bar on Telagraph Avenue in Berkeley in
1975, IIRC. They spent a lot of time playing in bars and they became a very tight live band. They sound GREAT on stage, and I liked their music more than most of their contemporaries. They actually played rock n roll, not whatever the shit was that most others were playing then (and now).

I'd like to see them do something new.

47. Some interesting trivia...that E.C. fans prob already know...
Clover was a US country rock band formed in Mill Valley, California in 1967. They are best known as the backup band for Elvis Costello's 1977 debut album My Aim Is True (recorded in the U.K.), and for members later forming or joining more successful acts, including Huey Lewis and the News, The Doobie Brothers, and Lucinda William....from the wiki.

H.L. & T. N. were alright...they were what they were.
