Straight women DUer's over 30, how do you refer to your SO? |
|
Say you're seeing a guy, or living with him, but you're not engaged. If you were talking to a co-worker/casual acquaintance, how would you refer to him?
"My SO"
"The guy/man I'm seeing"
"My boyfriend"
Other?
(I think the English language needs more words for this, for both sexes.)
Oh, under-30's, you can respond too. Except that "boyfriend" makes somewhat more sense applied to a 20-something, as opposed to a 60-something.

Sometimes, it's "my gentleman friend," and some other times I refer to him as "whatshisname."

Haven't had a SO in almost 8 years. Referred to last one as "my boyfriend"...and even though am over 50, would still use the same reference...that's if I had a SO...ya know..just sayin'. ;)

i'm 27, my guy is 30 and i feel slightly absurd calling him my boyfriend. if i don't use his name, i usually call him my guy (as you can see) or my sweetie

I'm living with him, but I'm not engaged, so that counts, right? ;)
I was 30 when we met, and I did refer to him as my boyfriend for a short while, but I guess that does start to sound silly at some point. I don't know what I would say, but I can't see myself saying "SO" in real, actual conversation.

Well, since we're married, I call him "my husband!"
But I agree with your idea that English needs more words for this...

6. In my '50s, and I say "my boyfriend" for lack of a better choice. |
|
He sometimes refers to me as "my friend," and we ended up having a discussion about it because I didn't like it because I don't think it differentiates me from any friend. He has also referred to me as "my girl," which I find even weirder than the word 'girlfriend'--it makes me think, 'what, are we in the fifties or something' (the decade).

Polite company, my boyfriend.
Impolite company, my shackmate or my studmuffin.
He's far too old to be a boy, and he's far more than my friend.
