Poll question: Book Report! Who read "Digital Fortress" by Dan "DaVinci Code" Brown... |
|
Edited on Mon Feb-23-04 12:26 PM by Richardo
And how badly did it suck?
I had a chance to borrow this earlier (1998) book by Brown (and therefore did not part with any money, gracias a dios) and I gotta say that Brown is 0 for 2 as far as I'm concerned.
<Spoiler Warning!>
Once again, just like in "DVC", it takes over 200 pages for our nation's top cryptographers to overlook a patently obvious anagram that of course turns the whole plot. (I spotted it in about 15 seconds.)
How can this guy be a hyper best seller? Are Americans really such lowbrow idiots? (I'm a P/T bookseller so I know the answer to that question is, of course, "Yes".) :grr:

I was suckered in by the PR on the "DaVinci Code" and read it.
It stunk.
How it ever got to the top of the book charts is a mystery to me.

It was fiction... which meant the author could have chosen a spectacular ending, right?
So why did he (or his publisher) choose the most predictable, downer ending possible?

5. I never saw what the big deal... |
|
about the "DaVinci Code" anyway. My take was that it was just a dumbed down "Foucault's Pendulum." Poor Umberto Eco, getting dissed again.

6. I don't like Umberto Eco either |
|
I find his writing incredibly ponderous. He's obviously smart, but he writes terribly.
He's definitely a lot better than that DaVinci Code guy. Gawd.

4. I thought it was very tame |

In fact, if memory serves me right, this was written a few years ago and very much has that "first book" feel about it.
