We caught a newly hatched garter snake at the shop |
|
He fought us, but we were able to catch him and put him in a clear box so we can look at him. We gave him earth, grass, sticks, a drinking water dish and a swimming dish. We also gave him a grasshopper for food and I am going to feed him worm sections on monday. He is so cute, when you go to look at him he gets up and all you see his two tiny, black eyes looking at you. He is about the size of a night crawler.

You know, you can't mention baby animals without posting a photo. This goes for snakes, too.
I like snakes.

4. I looked it up on the web |
|
He will live..snakes generally only eat once a week or so and we have a snake store close by that sells food. All he needs is his drinking water and a pool that he can take a dip in. and he's happy. I guess we have to eventually get him a heating rock. but its so hot in the shop right now, he doesn't need it at the moment.

5. Don't get him a hot rock -- they can burn his belly |
|
Just get him a heat lamp, or the reptile heating mat that goes under the cage. My wife has a bunch of lizards, so I learned a lot about them through her.

It's amazing how full grown men can be reduced to children when it comes to catching and keeping a snake.

17. he can live a couple of years but having done this once i won't do it again |
|
my baby garter snake lived only 2 years and died of an obstruction -- if i'd left him in the yard he could have lived for many more years -- i've seen them get up to serious size out there, well serious size for a garter snake
we all know that many pets, such as all of the pet birds, pet cats, etc. live MUCH longer in captivity than in the wild, however, to my knowledge, this is not true of the reptiles, our knowledge of how to care for them is not as good
this happened in the 90s now and pet care does advance quickly so talk to the folks at a pet store that specializes in herps and take their suggestions seriously
garter snakes are cute, feisty too, i once handled an alligator and hours later handled the snake, thought my hands were clean, but he knew...first and only time he bit me HARD
i did have the heat lamp (necessary to proper digestion) but apparently i was missing some other key ingredient

You have a newborn garter snake!
Garter snakes are viviparous - they're born, not hatched.

14. Caught a tarantula in my classroom last week. |
|
I figure someone must've brought him to school last year and he escaped and has lived off of cockroaches this summer.

Doesn't a garter snake do best in his own habitat?
