You're casting "The Joker" role for Batman 3 or 4, who do you pick? (spoilers)
Since the Joker did not die in the Dark Knight (Batman 2) movie, he will likely be coming back in Batman 3 or 4.

Who do you think should play The Joker next time around, assuming the other actors stay the same - Bale, Caine, Freeman, Oldman.

Obviously, it's a huge act to follow with Heath Ledger's performance in Dark Knight, but it is inevitable that Joker comes back...

Who is up to the task?

1. I just don't
There's a 99% chance they ruin the series if the Joker is recast.

29. I very much doubt Heath Ledger would have done a sequel
he seemed to be against that kind of thing

33. Have not been able to find a link
I know that I saw in several places right after Heath died that he was signed on for at least one more. The question was how The Joker's fate would be handled in the movie.

All of the key players from the first one were signed to 3 picture deals.

34. It is fairly standard
that actors in "franchise" type movies sign multi-picture deals.

5. I do this scene in Batman 3:
COMMISSIONER
There was a prisioner uprising at Arkam.

BATMAN
oh? Anyone get out?

COMMISSIONER
No. Thank God. And it gets better, the Joker was shot dead by one of the guards after he grabbed a knife. But that's not why I called you, the Riddler has struck again...

6. I don't pick anybody.
Nobody can ever match Heath Ledger's performance. Nobody can ever come close. Trying to re-cast that role would be a terrible idea.

I prefer the idea that the Joker has escaped, he's on the run, and he's in hiding - trying to rebuild his connections so he can strike again. You don't see him in the movie, but his shadow still exists in the city of Gotham. That's the best they can probably do.

8. You cannot have a Joker after Heath Ledger.
No one can possibly ever replace him. And if they try people are going to ignore it. After what I just saw Heath do with that role, I am amazed. Poor kid was so talented and he let the role get to him.
They will never cast anyone else as Joker.

14. Johnny Depp could do it, if they could afford him
Benicio del Toro could probably do it, too.

Heath Ledger's performance was amazing and totally eclipsed any Joker that came before him, including Mark Hamill's and especially including Jack Nicholson's. But another strong actor could successfully take over the role if the script were good enough.

9. I'm getting a little irritated at the meme that you can't replace Ledger's Joker
It's BULL.

It was a good performance, great even, but they can and will bring the Joker back.

I'm sorry Ledger died and all, but let's get over it people. The character of the Joker lives on and belongs in the Batman universe.

I still think Mark Hamill deserves a look in that role.

11. I agree
Hamill might be too old compared to Ledger & Bale, though.

Was thinking of an up-and-coming actor in his mid to late 20s.

13. Ben Whishaw
His performance in Perfume: The Story of a Murderer was brilliant and chilling. His Joker would be more subdued than Ledger's, but quite possibly more subtle.

and make millions off it, as usual.

The Dark Knight is just a big marketing machine. Nothing more, nothing less.

19. I doubt Nolan will recast the Joker.
Chances are he'll be mentioned in the next movie as cooling his heels in Arkham.

I would agree that Johnny Depp would be the best man for the part, and even as expensive as he is, Nolan & co. can afford him (you see how much money The Dark Knight is making?)

My bet is that the next Batman will have the Riddler.

36. Well, not necessarily
It does tell people that the Joker probably survived - but, doesn't tell you anything about the fate of Rachel Dawes, Harvey Dent or anybody else.

Scarecrow survived the first movie, and while Ras A'Ghul seemingly died, it was not 100% sure...

I just hope they don't go overboard with adding in too many villains, which has been the bane of superhero movies: after two good initial Spiderman movies with Green Goblin & Doc Ock, they blew it in the 3rd movie cramming in Venom and Sandman...

38. The only way there would be a new Joker if it was a new reincarnation of the movie series
IE: There was only one Joker for the Keaton series and that was Jack Nicholson and I would suspect that there would only be one Joker for the Bale series, which is Heath Ledger. If a decade or so down the line they decide to restart the movies again then there will probably be another Joker. But I think in light of what happened to Heath and the powerhouse performance he did - they would not recast him during this series of Batmans.

39. Well, at the end of the Keaton/Nicholson Batman
The Joker fell off the tall tower and was dead - plus, Nicholson got a ridiculous amount of money for that movie, like 5% of the gross or something like that...

and, I will never underestimate how low Hollywood will go in their quest for extra money and free publicity.

40. That's true but I still think this is a 'One Time Only' with the Joker for the Bale series
and if they did bring the Joker back with Bale, it would probably not be the next movie. There are plenty of other charcaters that can come scourge the city of Gotham without looking crass with recasting the Joker so quickly
