I saw "The X-Files: I Want to Believe" today.
I liked it. It was everything I expected it to be. It was basically a two-hour long normal "monster of the week" X-Files episode. There was only four of us in the theater watching it (whereas The Dark Knight was filled to full capacity :eyes:).

It sucked that the movie tanked this weekend. I was hoping it'd do really well. :(

1. Thanks for the review. It's not about the longer arc, about the alien invasion?
I didn't watch the last televised episodes so I don't know if that was resolved. Honestly, if it's not about the arc, I'm not too interested to do more than rent it...which might be a mistake as the X-Files, even at their worst, were still a lot of fun.

2. It didn't deal with the alien arc at all.
Just a "monster of the week" kinda thing going on in the movie. Hardcore X-Files fans will like it.

6. So there's no cigarette-smoking man in this one?
I, too, was resistant to see it, because of the alien thing...if you say it's a monster story, I'm getting in line for matinee tomorrow.

I love X-Files...stayed up all night last night watching the marathon on TBS.

:D

40. I look forward to seeing it on DVD
I won't likely get to the theater, but I'm glad to hear that they went with the one-shot monster. That stupid alien arc went on way too long in the series, and there's no need to extend it even further.

Thanks for the review. I still haven't forgiven Billy Connoly for Timeline, but I'll choke down my disgust long enough to watch Scully and Mulder chase a monster once again.

45. the monster of the week episodes in the early years were the best (spoilers)
the sewer beast from chernobyl, the little kid whose dead twin kept killing everybody, the whole town that was an expirement, the jersey devil, "tooms", the one with Jim Rose circus, the "Chaco Chicken Corporation"

This movie tried to revive this, but (spoiler) when did Mulder and Scully become an item? It's weird. I thought the fact that Scully was more like a sister to him, had a lot more potential for original stories, especially since his own sister's abduction drove him to take the job in the first place.

It was awkward, I thought. Everybody was yelling at each other. I guess that happens when a main character is a pedophile priest, and I thought the gay marriage thing came out of nowhere, too. They could have at least explained that a little more. (Why was that guy in the garage in the first place when he got wounded? the rest of the story revolves around the fact that he's wounded. What were they looking for?

And stem cells! It seemed like the supernatural phenomenon took a back seat to those issues. The least they could have done (spoiler) is make that "special" dog a little more realistic with CGI or something.

4. I really haven't seen much in the way of advertising for it. Which guarantees an early bomb.
Let's just hope it gets enough word of mouth and die-hard fans to keep it in the theaters long enough to at least do decently.

5. I was able to see it on opening night.
I liked it as well. It reminded me of a very good X-Files TV episode - and some of those truly great episodes are some of my favorite TV in the history of ever. I was a HUGE fan of The X-Files back in the day, and this movie reminded me just how much I love the show. As soon as I have some disposable income again, I'm going to start buying the seasons.

9. My favorite episodes were always the really weird ones
Like the carny guy with an attached twin that ate people, or Jose Chung's An Alien, and I can't remember the name of the episode but the one with the insurance guy who could tell when and how people were going to die. I loved it when it was mixed with a little bit of goofiness.

10. "Humbug" and "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose."
Humbug = the one about the carnival town.

The Bruckman episode is the one in which Bruckman could see people's deaths--it's also the episode in which Dana got Queequeg.

I think it was an alligator.

It was the lake-monster episode about Big Blue.

I was really sad when Queequeg died. :(

41. You're thinking of two separate episodes
The Peter Boyle episode hinted at a small dog (Pomeranean?} eating its deceased owner, but that's not the dog that got gator-grabbed.

That was Scully's dog Queequeg, in a different episode.

44. Yeah I guess I'm confused
Edited on Mon Jul-28-08 11:11 AM by Connonym
because I thought Scully took the dog that belonged to Peter Boyle's neighbor. I know it wasn't in that episode that the dog got killed but I thought it was the same dog.

Ok, I looked at the X-Files Wiki and this is what they had to say about it:

"Queequeg was a pet Pomeranian dog belonging to FBI Special Agent Dana Scully. (TXF: "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose"). She ate her old Owner in "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose")

Queequeg accompanied Mulder and Scully to Georgia to investigate mysterious deaths pertaining to the legendary Big Blue, and although it is not clearly shown in the episode, Queequeg may have been eaten by Big Blue or simply devoured by a large alligator after it ran off into the woods."

51. No, it's the same dog. Scully adopted the old lady's dog
who was Clyde Bruckman's neighbor. She then named it Queequeq, who was later eaten. I guess that's fitting.

I forget the name - the one where Mulder goes to a town overrun with roaches and in the end he and Scully get covered with exploding manure. In the beginning of the episode Scully is giving queegquag a bath.

38. My wife and I liked it a lot too
We weren't huge fans of the series, but we liked the first few seasons. This movie was very reminiscent of the "standalone" episodes from that time. It was very atmospheric, suspenseful, and thought-provoking. And of course, the acting was terrific, particularly by Gillian Anderson.

Two thumbs up from us. It's a shame that this movie wasn't better promoted. We didn't even know there was a new X-Files movie coming out until just a couple of weeks ago.

since the movie been out, I've noticed a lot of stores pushing X Files seasons big time, so I've been catching up on past episodes. So far I'm in season 4...last episode I saw was this Jewish lady making mud golems to avenge her lovers death...

I've seen most of season 1, and 2...I swear I only missed perhaps...4 episodes per season, but since season 3 I'm seeing episodes I've never seen before, and its GREAT...I miss this series.
