1. LG makes some pretty good "just regular ol' phones"
That's what I've got. It's got a camera and an extended life battery. That's about as fancy as I get.

4. I had that phone up until about a year ago...

It's my work-provided wireless phone (through AT&T). Now, I have this one:

But for my Verizon account (my personal phone), I just upgraded to the new LG Dare (iPhone clone):

10. LG Dare :drools:
I've had my Razr for just over 2 years now and am in desperate need for an upgrade. I can get the Dare for $149 (and I'm about to say aw fuck it and just buy it) but the family plan with all the bells and whistles is like $150 a month which is a bit expensive. But damn I really really want the Dare!

Pretty much the same goodies as the iPhone without having to switch to an inferior network (at least in my area) and don't have to buy into the "cult of Apple"

5. Same here
When my old phone bit the dust, I went to the Cingular store for a replacement. Hundreds of dollars--camera, computer, text, e-mail, etc. etc. etc....oh yeah, and they also make calls. Blech. I sat down with the clerk and told him "I just want a phone that makes phone calls. That's all." He looked at me as if I were an escapee from the mental hospital, but he handed me a Nokia "candy bar" phone. It's uncomfortable (just not ergonomically pleasant) and it does have an internets connection and texting but not prominent, but I said "Sold!" because it was, well, free. :D

6. I swear i'd buy the same phone i'd get for my grandmother
(if she was still alive). makes a frickin' phone call - that's it.

i don't need to be tied into life every second of the day, or taking phone calls while in the bathroom. I want something I can call my wife on to tell her i'll be late, or call triple-A if my car needs to get towed, and that's about all. No one has my phone number except for close family and i rarely use the thing. Honestly, honestly, honestly, next time i'm just going to get something that frickin' dials a number and has good reception. It's a frickin' phone. i'm more than able to bring my laptop with me if I want a goddamned calendar. or maybe i'll just bring a calendar.

7. Gave it up, went tracfone
pay as you go it averages out to 8$ a month- Granted, I don't use it other than to call the parents on Sundays or for emergencies. I don't chat on it and I don't access the internet although you can. It doesn't even have voice dial let alone a camera. It is a bare bones phone Motorola M170 and a lifestyle change to go with it. I can get things done 8-5 and make a shopping list (which were half of my conversations) Not being accessible is liberating!

8. I've used TracFone for years
TracFone is the cheapest possible plan if you don't use your phone a lot. You only pay for minutes. Nothing else.

I spend $100 per year for my phone. That's just over $8 per month. I have to renew in September, and I still have nearly 600 minutes left. Those minutes roll over, so they're not lost. I see some people who are on their cell phone constantly. If that's you, don't get TracFone. But if you are like me, and use a cell phone a few times per week, it's a great deal. We've got two of them now, and we've been a customer for years.

I know that my response doesn't really address your OP, since you were talking about hardware, but my phone is a Motorola with minimal do dads. It was cheap, and it works great. With our basic phone and basic service we couldn't be happier.

11. Well, actually, I may go with that
i don't use my phone much. i have a comcast landline that can call aywhere in the country for free, and I hate being "reachable" every second of the day, which is why my wife, my son, my employer, and my son's school has the number and i think that's about it. Oh, and my ex-wife, but there was no choice in the matter there.

i bet my monthly minutes could be counted on one hand.

9. right there with you. don't want something so versatile that I have to stop and
think before actually answering it.

I have the LG I have because I wanted a flip phone, and it was the cheapest one.

When it dies, I will go with Your Most Basic option again, it is what works for me.
