Mondays IN The Undergroundrailroad (Black History Month) 02/23/2004

Mondays 'IN' The Undergroundrailroad

______________________________________________________________________________________________

Hello gang! Welcome to Mondays In The Undergroundrailroad for February 23, 2004. How is everyone doing today? Well, I have hugs, kisses, an envelope with a gold seal (for drama, of course) and an edible chocolate Oscar for you to enjoy! Get busy gathering the ingredients for the occasion next Sunday. Yes, it's that time of the year, The 2004 Academey Awards. It is quite simple and yes, it's our dessert for today!

In view of the upcoming Academy Awards next week I want to pay tribute to several African-Americans in our final weeks of Black History Month and you know, black IS BEAUTIFUL. For instance, who can forget the handsome Richard Roundtree and Samuel L. Jackson in the lead role of the sexy detective, Shaft. Now those are two bad mother fuc "SHUT YO MOUTH"! Shaft, can you dig it?

What about the beautiful singer and actress, Vanessa Williams. She had a very similar Janet Jackson (also beautiful and talented) incident in her career and at that time I recall the RIGHT WING media saying that she was all "washed up". NOT TRUE as the world now knows.

As we leave Black History Month, I want to thank all of my Monday group for making Black History Month, Black History Monday. Yes, it was my objective to share my black history with you, my friends. But I think *all* of us, in a very unintentional way, discard the commercialism of the monthly tag. We are DUers regardless of the color of our skin. We are progressive, we are bad mother fuc (ok, Shaft, "shut yo mouth"). As my mother would say, we all need each other and yes my friends in the Monday "bunch", I need you.

Lovin you.

Artelia Bendolph peers through her cabin window in Gees Bend, Alabama

Before Black History Month leaves, I want to pay tribute in the UGRR to the award winning photographer, Arthur Rosthstein and his subject, Artelia Bendolph. What a great image!

I have always loved this photograph taken by Arthur Rosthstein in Gees Bend, Alabama, (April 1937) simply entitled, "Artelia Bendolph."

In this photograph, Rothstein juxtaposes the unsmiling profile of a girl with tattered newspapers that advertise the wonders of cellophane for keeping food fresh and the health benefits of a breakfast of shredded wheat. The girl's surroundings make it obvious that fresh food is not something regularly available in her diet. Farm Security Administration photographers often highlighted such ironies to support programs that aided the poor.

The rather hopeless plight that slavery, then sharecropping, then tenancy has doomed countless African-American Alabama families. The famous photograph of Artelia Bendolph staring out of the window of her cabin adds to Rothstein's characterization of Alabama blacks. The little girl provides little in the way of hope but instead depicts a resolute determination to persevere. The newspaper advertisement next to her head shows a white woman holding a platter of food, contrasting the ability of a national culture that was still in the shadow of slavery.

I have often wondered the fate of Artelia. Did she marry, become a Doctor, an educator or was she a victim of an uncertain fate that awaited her or not?

Where ever you are Artelia Bendoph, it is *your* picture that is on my wall.

Sidney Poitier, In The Heat of the Night

Guess who's Coming to Dinner?

__________________________________________________________________

Sidney Poitier

There are three movies that stand out when I think of the brilliant actor, Sidney Poitier, A Raisin in the Sun, In the Heat of the Night (1967), and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967). In 1967, I don't think the world was ready for the on screen chemistry of Sidney and his sexy white female co-star (wow, I can't believe I just said that! We really weren't progressive in that era, I'm sad to say) and their love story. America, and the world that knew our social history, had never seen anything like that before. You had the handsome Sidney Poitier playing the role of Doctor John Wade Prentice, a very wasp-esq "sounding" name and *he* was the DOCTOR with a specialty! Do you recall the scene when Matt Drayton, played by Spencer Tracy, had Dr. Prentice "checked out"? Well Matt was embarrassed when his secretary read of a tick list of Dr. Prentice's credentials. Dr. Prentice had studied all over the world and had more awards than most prominent Doctors of any era or for any color for that matter. It was really something to see. Also, the on screen interaction of his love interest, the white upper class Joanna "Joey" Drayton (Katharine Houghton) with her stunning flowing hair and petite figure. This is the kind of film that African-Americans were begging for. We wanted to be depicted as professionals with the capacity to love. Honestly, there are places in the south to this day that will NOT view that movie in their homes. Why? Southern "honor" a term that I regard as archaic and primitive as slavery itself. I do think Guess Who's Coming to Dinner brought the touchy subject of interracial marriage and dating right into the main stream and advanced the fact that blacks and whites can love and, in fact, be depicted in loving, caring even platonic situations. I remember my first time viewing the movie. It was *very* uncomfortable to watch at that time. Segregation was the "rule of law" for all of my life. But I fell in love with Sidney at that very moment.

The second movie that I certainly feel Sidney should have won an Oscar for is In the Heat of the Night. Again, we have Sidney as a professional forensic detective being asked to investigate a murder in a racist southern town in Mississippi. The south certainly was unprepared for the African-American Sidney Poitier in the role of law enforcement in the 60's. But his role was socially important and excellent in it's delivery.

Sidney was on a role in 1967 and his role of Detective. Virgil Tibbs did not disappoint me. Looking back on the movie, the movie's scene steeling line, "THEY CALL ME MR. TIBBS" (to the gasps of the movie audience, I recall) as he addressed the southern sheriff, Police Chief Bill Gillespie (brilliantly played by Rod Steiger) was not the shocking scene IMO. It would be the moment when the town aristocrat, Mr. Endicott, was being questioned by Detective. Tibbs. Mr. Endicott didn't like the line of questioning coming from a black man and for that he slapped Virgil Tibbs. Well, without missing a BEAT, Virgil slapped Mr. Endicott RIGHT BACK. Mr. Endicott was stunned and so was the audience that I shared the theater with. At that moment you could hear a kernel of popcorn drop on the floor. The film took risks for it's time but it made a social statement about the importance of black actors and the roles that they portrayed. Thing were never the same.

In the Heat of the Night won the "Best Picture" Oscar in 1967 over some very stiff competition ("Bonnie and Clyde", "The Graduate", "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner") and Rod Steiger, in what I think was his greatest role, deservedly won "Best Actor". What could have prepared Rod Steiger for this role because it had nothing to do with being born in the south. Rod Steiger was born only a few miles from where I type this report today, liberal West Hampton, New York. He brilliantly took this role, transformed it and made it his own. I suppose that same argument could be made *against* Sidney Poitier at least receiving the nomination for his role as Detective.Virgil Tibbs. For many years the African-American community was crushed over this Oscar omission. But at the end of the day, the African-American culture won. His roles were landmark for it's time and many, many social barriers were changed as a result of all time.

Today Sidney Poitier remains one of the most respected and beloved figures in American cinema of the twentieth century. No. Of all time.

16. Well hello Proud Patriot! How are you today?
Thanks for dropping in to the UGRR to check things out.

My favorite part of the Academy Awards is watching all the action on the red carpet. The fashions are fun to watch, but I'm still stuck in basic black slacks, blouse and flats. (the classic fashion of Lucille Ball).

I adore to this day, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner! About Little Nikita. When I saw the motion picture (on day two of it's opening if I recall) I was very much taken aback at the appearance of Sidney Poitier. Of course my expectations (still of the 60's) and the fact that he had aged since his last movie put a damper on *my mood*. But time can not stop. I think I put him on such a high pedestal, that I thought he could never age. In the 60's was absolutely in LOVE with this man. I would tell everyone who would listen that I was going to marry Sidney Poitier one day. But the acting in Little Nikita was outstanding and I liked the plot of the movie.

Well, PP, I will see you on DU at the Oscars! Thanks my friend for dropping in to say hello.

Love,

Mina :loveya:  :hi:

As always you provide excellent education and information.

1. Not in the theater, but I might rent it at some point.

2. My friends and I are considering an Oscar party, but one of the hosts' mother is dieing, so...:-(

3. Shoot to Kill and Sneakers are two of my favorite Poitier films. I remember seeing him on Oprah years ago, and being quite impressed by him.

17. Hi GOPisEvi ! How are you? Now what are we doing for the Kentucky Derby?

Did you bet the future race? I need some tips for the next future race. At any rate, I'm looking forward to the Kentucky Derby (as always) and I know you will handicap the race for DU! Yes?

So I see you are considering an Oscar party! Btw, I'm sorry to hear about your friend's mother :( I'm sending good vibes. Maybe a small group would help your friend. Cheer him/her up a little.

You are the second person to vote for "Sneakers" which I have to admit I have never seen. I'll have to get over to Amazon.com to buy it.

Thanks for stopping in my friend .

Edited on Mon Feb-23-04 04:12 PM by Kamika
I don't have much to add, but I'm still waiting for a recognized american-asian actor/actress who isn't a hooker/gangster/shop owner

About Vanessa.. only time I saw her in anything (I think) was in the worst Star Trek episode ever made :(

The questions.

1. Yeah I'm gonna go see it with some friends from church most likely

2. Probably not, I tried it once and fell asleep :D

3. Hmm I only saw heat of the night, sneakers and the jackal with bruce willis.. sneakers and the jackal sucked bigtime, so I'll go with heat of the night :D

Great post as always !! :D

22. Hey Hey Kamika! I love that Tina Turner avatar :-)
I don't recall Vanessa Williams (the singer) in any Star Trek episodes but it's possible. She is a better singer than actress.

So, you will see the movie with friends. Let me know what you think Kamika.

BTW, I do agree with the issues of diversity at the Academy Awards and the type of roles minorities are portrayed in. I fight that fight with you Kamika, BIG TIME!

You are the third person who said they saw Sneakers. In The Heat Of The Night,IMO, is the best.

Thanks for those sweet words. You're the greatest Kamika.

Now, go take that walk down the red carpet as you get out of that slam-min car you posted in the UGRR last week ;-)

Get going, your public awaits you!

Hmm I could get a taste for that while waving to cameras :D

Thanks for the Turner complimant.. I love her voice and her later work so much!! And I LOVED her in Mad Max3, primarly becauseI LOVE post apocalyptic movies like mad max and secondary because it was such a non stereotypical role. Not to mention "We don't need another hero" is a great song

Anyway here's the trek episode: http://www.st-hypertext.com/ds9-5/withoutsin.html It's from the spinoff DS9. In my opninion the best trek series of them all but I agree with the reviewer about this episode.

Heres a snippet from the review

"I was actually embarrassed watching this show. I wanted to crawl under my chair and hide."

I remember now, I also saw Eraser

But atleast she can sing.

I recall that Vanessa Williams sang the Star Bungled Banner for Arnold S. inauguration in CA.

I was not impressed.

But I respect her struggle.

6. Happy Monday Dearest Mina!!!
Edited on Mon Feb-23-04 03:30 PM by BigMcLargehuge
Hello Mina and thanks again for a month of fantastic Black History Month articles. My Monday’s wouldn’t be complete without them. I am a fan of all the “blaxploitation” titles of the 70s. From Shaft to Foxy Brown (starring the amazingly lovely Pam Grier) and even Black Belt Jones! I must admit I was a little disappointed with Sam Jackson’s take on the titular urban detective. However, the real star of the flick was, of course, the original Shaft. Richard Roundtree. Hey, Shaft, as I am sure you know, was directed by another prominent Black photographer, Gordon Parks, who brought the South Side of Chicago to the pages of several renowned newspapers and magazines.

A special shout out to Wesley Snipes who almost singlehandedly revived the superhero genre with Blade, and got his big break in New Jack City, a favorite in the McLargehuge house.

Lovely picture of Artelia Bendolph. I will definitely look for more collaborations between she and Arthur Rothstein! Thanks for the tip! I love finding otherwise unknown art online!

And now, onto the questions!

The Questions Of The Day

1. Do you plan to see the Mel Gibson movie, The Passion Of The Christ?

Unknown as yet. I am Atheist and tend to steer clear of religious films. However, I am curious because of the Aramaic and Latin script. I am reluctant though of not for the subject matter, the controversy surrounding the film. Keep in mind my Mother dragged me across the picket lines to see Monty Python’s Life of Brian when I was but a wee lad. I’ll never forget the angry people outside Cinema 140 with plackards… So, I am no stranger to controversial religious flicks.

Still, seeing it would be an ostensible endorsement of the thing and I am not sure I want to “sanctify” the flick with my money. We’ll see.

Maybe I’ll just rent The Trouble with Angels instead and get my rare religious movie fix with Rosalind Russell and Haley Mills.

2. Are you going to watch the Academy Awards ? If so what categories interest you the most?

Nope. Never do. More important things to do than watch TV. Dammit I got a book to finish writing!!! Must turn off TV… Must not watch TV…

3. What is your favorite Sidney Poitier movie?

I’m torn. I LOVE A Raisin in the Sun, but my all time favorite is To Sir With Love. That is one of the flicks that made me want to teach. The way he works that class of hooligans is wonderful. FWIW To Sir With love makes a great Double Feature with The Prime of Miss Jean Brody.

_________________________________________________________________

Big Mac, you say such nice sweet things and they always make me feel good. I do enjoy your posts. I always learn something from you!

About Gordon Parks. There was a working relationship between Arthur Rothstein and Gordon Parks. They worked together as photographers at the invitation of Roy Stryker (for the Farm Security Admin.). They took pictures of rural America for the agency. When I saw Shaft II in the movie theater (day one, btw, I HAD to see it) I walked out of there hating that version. Yes, the "good news" was Richard Roundtree who was in the original with that rocking Issac Hayes soundtrack. I'm glad they did not touch that music. That would have been an historical film production error. When you hear those first few bars, you *think*, SHAFT. Can you did it Big Mac?

About The Passion of The Christ. I think the controversy of the movie intrigues me and it might have a lot to do with the film making aspect of it. I liked your story (once again) about you and Mom (yes, I call her that now) crossing the protest line to see Monty Python’s Life of Brian.

I am surprised that you are not watching the Academy-Awards. Question. Has a science-fiction movie ever won an Oscar?

To Sir With Love is just a beautiful story with Sidney this time in the role of a teacher. Oh did he wrap that classroom around his finger. Actually, I am a lover of motion picture soundtracks and I have always loved the soundtrack for To Sir With Love. Big Mac, LOL, the Double Feature! OHHHH, how I wish those could return. The marquee was the most fun to look at.

Have a great week Big Mac.

Love,

Mina :loveya:  and a  for Mom :)

I really look forward to Mondays IN the UGRR and today you did not disappoint. I was very interested in the photograph of Artelia Bendolph. She is beautiful and the photo speaks to you. Thanks for sharing that.

Finally, I am a Sidney Poitier fan. I have most of his movies and he brings a different dynamic to each role.

1. Yes, I will view this movie and decide for myself what is "controversial".
2. I watch the Oscars every year.
3. Well, about the best Sidney Poitier role, I would have to agree with you Mina, In The Heat Of The Night.

See you next Monday Mina and good evening to my fellow Du posters in the UGRR.

The Questions Of The Day

1. Do you plan to see the Mel Gibson movie, The Passion Of The Christ?

Naww ... I read the book.

2. Are you going to watch the Academy Awards ? If so what categories interest you the most?

Sure. Besides the 'major' awards, I enjoy the film editing and cinematography awards. So, so much of the tone of a movie is dependent on that craftsmanship that I find them fascinating. I have some personal appreciation for these crafts, having shot, edited, and overdubbed (with music) my own scuba dive video. It took me over 300 hours just to edit it to get a 2 hour 'underwater music video'.

3. What is your favorite Sidney Poitier movie?

"To Sir With Love" still makes me goosebump and tear up ... as does "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner". I guess I put both of those only somewhat ahead of my other Sydney favorites: "Raisin In the Sun," "Lilies of the Field," and "A Patch of Blue."

36. Another Sidney Fan! Hi TN and thanks for dropping in to the UGRR!
Questions of the Day

1. Read the book, so no movie.
2. OK, watching the Academy Awards and you like the film editing and cinematography awards. The sound tone *is* important in the movie. I like it loud.

3. Sidney movies, "To Sir With Love" is one of my favorites too!
BTW, I also liked "A Patch of Blue"!

Thanks for dropping in the UGRR TN!

Love,

Mina :loveya: :hi:

14. Happy Monday!
Hi Mina! Thanks for the great thread, and especially for the story of the photograph of Artelia Bendolph.

:hi:

1. Do you plan to see the Mel Gibson movie, The Passion Of The Christ?

2. Are you going to watch the Academy Awards ? If so what categories interest you the most?

3. What is your favorite Sidney Poitier movie?

(1) Don't have much interest in seeing Gibson's movie.

(2) Not planning to watch. The categories that interest me are the big ones, of course, and also Best Documentary and/or Best Foreign Film. But I don't really follow these awards that much these days.

(3) Not familiar with many of his movies, so I'm not sure.

Have a great week!

Peter

15. Good afternoon Mina!
Another wonderful thread. I adore Sidney Poitier. I wish we saw more of him in today's films. Vanessa Williams...I remember my grandmother being "horrified" and I couldn't figure out why. Go Vanessa. I wish I looked as good as she does.

1. I don't plan on seeing it, but not for any reason other than I never plan on seeing movies. ;) I'd have no problem seeing it.

2. I would love to watch the Academy Awards!!! Unfortunately MrGrumpy doesn't "do" awards shows. I usually wait for him to fall asleep and then I catch the last hour or so.

3. My favorite would have to be "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner". He was so handsome in that movie! But on the serious side, I think it was very well done. As one raised primarily in a middle class, white atmosphere it really gave me a different viewpoint.

Thanks Mina, For always ALWAYS making my day!!

:loveya:

40. Hello dear friend. You always make *my* day. How are you?
Just wanted to thank you for checking out Mondays IN The UGRR and I see we both love "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner"! I really had a crush on Sidney. He is such an exciting actor. I would love to meet him one day. I appreciated your comments on the movie Laura.

I only screen movies that I have an artistic interest in or just for fun. DVD's make me much less inclined to run to the theater. The turn around time is really fast. I wouldn't be surprised if "The Passion" is out by Christmas (another marketing approach).

Well, I check you out on Oscar night after Mr. G is off to sleep. You know, the internet makes it possible for us to watch it together ! I couldn't think of a better friend to hang out with, anytime.

Thanks again for stopping in to say hello.

Love,

Mina  :loveya:

18. The Artelia Bendolph photo is absolutely moving -
one of the best I've seen; when I remodel (hopefully next year) I want a room devoted to photography and will try to get a print of this. Fabulous!

On to the Q&A

1. Very few films get me into a theater, because I'm claustrophobic. This will NOT be one of the few!

2. I may watch, because LOTR is a nominee in many categories. But, since I'll be at the start of the Serum Run Commemorative on Sunday, and have to be 90 miles away from home by 10 a.m., probably not! May tape it, though.

3. I loved both In the Heat of the Night and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner - Poitier is a fabulous actor and one of the handsomest men ever. That said, I think my favorite was Raisin, because it's the first movie I saw him in, and I loved the plot.

Happy Monday, Mina and all my fellow DU'ers!

I would also like to thank you for your comments on the photo of Artelia Bendolph photo.

Is is stunning and it will make a great conversation piece in your proposed photography gallery! I would mat in on white in white with a glossy black frame. It will be an outstanding addition to your collection.

I see you will be watching the Oscars Sunday night. LOTR, I predict, will sweep the majority categories and the technical ones as well.

So, you liked both "In the Heat Of the Night" and "Guess who's coming to Dinner. Raisin in the Sun was my first serious look at Sidney and I loved the story.

Thanks for stopping in to say hello northofdenali. Please visit again. I would love to say hello.

Love and peace,

UGRR Mina :hi:

21. Hi UGRR
1. Nope. No Mel for me.
2. Try living in L.A. and avoiding the Oscars! It's impossible--the "pre-game show" (red carpet) is on 5 stations. And besides that, it's fun. I have a formal party every year and I even have favorites I root for. When they lose....let the drinking begin. And when they win....let the drinking begin.
3. "Raisin in the Sun"

so I can give you an official welcome!

LOL, living in LA and avoiding the Oscars. I can't imagine! I just love Joan Rivers and the RED CARPET!. It is so exciting!

I see you are hosting a formal party for the Academy Awards. DO you have themes or envelopes (as a game). It is really a lot of fun!

"Raisin in the Sun" seems to be the pick most DUers like. It was a great movie

Thanks for stopping in tishaLA to check things out down here. Please visit me again.

Love and peace,

32. Thank you, Undergroundrailroad!
The stunning photo of Artelia Bendolph reminds me of a drive I took recently on MD's Eastern Shore. Taking some of the less-worn roads I noticed an uncomfortable number of houses that looked as if they should be condemned; but clearly had families inhabiting them. Times haven't changed enough.

My favorite Sidney Poitier movie was Lilies of the Field, which I haven't seen in ages; but always made me cry when I was a little girl.

Will I see Mel Gibson's movie? Hell no. Sounds like over-sensationalized trash to me.

I never watch awards shows; but I'll sometimes read about them in the paper.

39. G'day, Mina/UGRR
I had a long Monday at work, a major crisis. If not for that, I would have posted earlier. :hi:

That is a telling photo. A picture is truly worth a thousand words.

Now for your questions:

1) No.

2) No. Not a fan of awards shows. I'll read the list in the paper.

3) My favorite one? There are so many I've seen, Lilies of the Field, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, To Sir with Love, In the Heat of the Night to name a few.

Always good to see you, Mina.

48. Hello, hello, hello Lurking_Argyle! I've been missing you! Oh, and I've
got your sweater:

Do you like it? I thought I would give you earth tones this week.

Don't worry about being late because I read every one of your posts and, as you can see, I'm posting on Wed.

Now on to the questions:

No "The Passion" movie.
No viewing the Academy Awards.
BUT, you like Sidney Poitier movies and many of my favorites.

those school girl days, of tellin tell and biting nails are gone To Sir with Love is one of my favorites. My all time favorite is "In The Heat Of The Night ". Detective Virgil Tibbs was mighty powerful considering it was in the 60's in the South.

Well, I'm going to bid you a good night my friend.

I want to thank you for stopping in the Underground every Monday to say hello to me. I don't care if you post on a Tuesday. I need to say hello to you my friend.

Love,

Mina

46. Hi Mina
1) Probably not. I don't have much time to go to the movies, and there are a half dozen others I'd prefer to see.

2) No. Typically, I don't like awards shows. I'll be watching the Simpsons or college basketball instead.

3) Probably "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner".

49. Hi TSIAS! Wow, I haven't seen you for a while in the UGRR. How are you?
Thanks for dropping in TSIAS, it means a lot to me.

Now for the questions:

1. Not much time for the movies.

2. No Oscars. I don't like award shows but I always make an exception for the Academy Awards. Sometimes I like to invite a few people over and we just hang out in front of the TV cheering our selections on!

3. Your favorite Sidney Poitier movie (also mine) "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner". It is truly a classic and it speaks volumes about progressive none of the government's business as it pertains to who we select as our partner.

Thanks TSIAS for stopping in to say hello. I always love hearing from you.

Love,

Mina :loveya: :hi:

50. Hi UGRR!
Answers to your questions;

1-No,but I'll watch it eventually.I'm not religious so I'm not sure what I'll really get out of it outside of the cinematographry aspects.

2-Nah,awards shows are too much pomp and circumstance for my tastes.Isn't there a hockey game on or something :)

3-The Bedford Incident with Poitier and Richard Widmark.

Sorry I missed the rest of the month :-(
