One of my cockatiels died this morning....
and my nephew took her out of the cage. Now her mate is calling for her and I am heartbroken. The 'pretty girl whistle' he does to allure her seems to trickle off in the end, almost like he knows, and just doesn't know what to do. I don't know how to make him feel better. He was with her for more than twenty years.

sigh

2. aww wow 20 years for the pair?
poor guy. There probably isn't much you can do. Another bird in the room, maybe.

3. He was perfectly quiet while she was lying at the bottom of the cage, but
about ten minutes after she was gone, he started. It is just heartbreaking.

5. Oh, I am so sorry!
I went through a similar thing with my dogs. They were both rescue and bonded from the very first moment, and when the larger one became ill, I begged my vets to do anything. I knew that my little guy would just be lost without her. You have my sincere sympathy. My suggestion would be to ask your vet for advice. I don't know your location, but one of mine specializes in birds...

10. Thank you Rhiannon!
I rescued a little Shitzu and my other dog (another rescue from Hurricane Isabel three years earlier) would not get out of the car if she had to stay at the vet. He would wait in the car until she came home. She was an old lady, and he took to her like a grandma. She died on Christmas Day and I spent most of it holding her in my arms.

Now Lorena. I am going to sleep in the living room with him tonight, just for company.

6. I'm sorry for your loss RedShoes.....
 I've never had birds, but I had two dogs who were littermates. When the female died (13.5), it was really hard on my male. He lived nearly three years longer. The first few days after her death he moped around and would hardly eat. Maybe a call to your Vet would help with some suggestions. I'm sorry....

7. pets mourn too
After my husband died, our pet chicken would wander into his room and sit by his bed, waiting for him to get up. Then she got sick and died two months later. I now have a cockatiel and can understand that the little guy missed his buddy. Give him lots of attention and bird hugs, so he knows the rest of his flock is ok.

9. aw...I'm giving him some quiet right now...he was never really the affectionate one
His name was even Dead Freddie. His wife was named Lorena because if he did not perform when she would give her mating call, she'd go over and pluck a feather out of his head. I'm serious. He actually has a bald spot. We all expected him to go first. And, since they mate for life, I don't expect that he is very long for this world.

But I am hoping for the best.

8. I'm so sorry.

I felt bad when Zoe died...

I adore Rusty and Scooter...

and Piers and Piri being a really close item, I know if one dies, the other will hate it. Especially if Piers goes first.

That's so very sad...
I'm sorry for you and your other poor birdie.:hug:

I've never owned a bird, and I don't know how to him feel better. I'd suggest a new companion, but maybe he's just got to grieve.
