The BlueIris Semi-Nightly Poetry Break, 7/28/08
"Love Poem"

At 4:30 a.m., I wake up
from a nightmare, bump
through the dark apartment
to pee, then sit and smoke
a cigarette in the living
room. When I get back
in bed, Ira wakes up
and says: "You're a sweet
man, do you know that?"
I tell him I've been having
bad dreams. I'm lying on
my back; he tells me to roll
on my side. As I do, he presses
against me from behind and
wraps his arm around my chest.
"You're safe now," he whispers
into my neck. "Go back to sleep.
You won't have any more bad dreams."

—David Trinidad

1. My dear BlueIris!
Ah, this is nice...

A gentle, erotic, loving poem...

...As I do, he presses
against me from behind and
wraps his arm around my chest...

This is so beautiful!

Thank you...

3. Well, I thought we needed to go back to the loving poems.
And since Trinidad is such a big hit here; I aim to please.

2. Nice
but not very "poetic" I guess.

Still nice.

4. One man's "not very poetic" is another man's
"It's time for me to weep with emotion," I guess.

6. That is cool and interesting.
The poet doesn't say how he feels about Ira's assurances. He doesn't even imply it. This poem is very sweet on the surface, but I'm left wondering what David really felt.

there's not even a hint about the way he feels about the relationship to give you a clue about how he feels in this situation.

It's a very well thought out verbal image that leaves you wondering what you're looking at.

That's really cool.

7. Hmmm. I didn't see the ambiguity, but now that you point it out...
it is interesting. What's not said is curious.
