Geeks and gamers of the lounge... quick question. |
|
I finally got around to upgrading my 3d card. What modern games should I invest in now? :P
The only games I've bought that wouldn't have run on my computer before are Lego Star Wars II, Lego Indiana Jones, Portal and Half-Life 2. I tend to like games that fit into one of three categories: Cute fun games, hence the first two on the list. Games that have some action and require at least some thought, hence the third and fourth. And the occasional RPG or adventure game (although decent adventure games are few and far between these days.)
Any suggestions for somebody who just jumped from having only a 32 meg video chipset to a 256 meg card? :)
The top-of-the-line games I had before I upgraded were all fairly old obviously. The newest RPG I had on my system was Dungeon Siege and the Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic games, and the newest action/shooter/ect. games I had were Halo and Star Wars: Jedi Academy. I also had Star Wars: Republic Commando on there (technically not s'posed to run on my computer, but it did. Not well, but it did.), but that belonged to my old roommate The_Animator, and so I gave the CD back before I moved.
Seriously though, what's come out in the last five years or so (but not the very latest crop of games. I've only got a 2.1 gHz processor, and the newest crop of games all want 2.3 or 2.4. And I don't have Vista, so don't bother mentioning Halo 2.) that you recommend for someone who isn't a serious gamer, but enjoys games in general.

|
I've played a few flight sims in my time, not a half-bad dogfighter for someone who isn't totally into those kinds of games. I'd be curious to see it from the other side. :)

But that's my crack. I've been playing that damn game going on FIVE years. There is still no other MMORPG out there that can touch it.
Time for my fix...

Easy to get lost in. Much easier to level the first 60 levels now then when I started.

5. I had to give it up or I would have ended up divorced. |

After nearly two years of all-consuming obsession with the game, I was just about to order my copy of the "Burning Crusade", when my wife took one look at me and said, "if you buy that, I'm out of here."

7. We both share our addiction |
|
And have passed it on to the kids.
It was really bad the first couple of years. Once we both stopped hard-core raiding, it got better. I'm totally a soloer now and like it that way. He's more into the pvp aspect and does battlegrounds. Kids are all limited to one hour of play a day, after their chores are done. I'll never let it consume me again. It is a blast in moderation though.

16. My proudest achievement... |
|
...was getting the first Paladin epic mount on my server. Of course, with all the questing and uber-rare materials, it ended up costing me about twice what it would have done just to buy one, the sense of achievement was worth it...for about five minutes (when the second guy on the server ambled past on his).

12. I moved to Lord of the Rings Online, because... |
|
...it is far more solo-friendly than WoW. You can basically level all the way solo, with occasional pick-up groups. That makes it easier for me to pick up and put down when other duties call.
I'm in awe of your ability to control your addiction, however. For me, I was one step away from WoWs Anonymous: "Hello, I'm Kutjara and I have five level 60 characters. Help me."

But I just couldn't get into it. Age of Conan didn't do it either. WoW is getting another expansion soon. I have no problem soloing, but I'm not all about epic gear anymore either.
I have two level 70s, a 63, and two 60's.

15. I usually prefer to solo for the most part, but if I do find a good group I'm all for it. |
|
I generally tend to choose classes that solo well in MMOs though. My favorate character of mine in Everquest was my Froglok paladin. She had a few minor healing and buffing spells, was able to tank and pull fairly well, and had good damage and health. And once I hit a certain point I got a rather handy 'send the enemy running off in the wrong direction' spell for when I accidentally pulled more than I could handle. :)

20. When we first started we had a group |
|
Dh, my two brothers-in-law and their friend. We did 5-man raids and it was fun. Then we all joined a large guild and it became too much like a job. It stopped being fun having to raid certain nights of the week. I stopped playing for a few months and then started just playing mostly on my own. It became fun again. I rarely group anymore. My newest character is on a totally different server where no one even knows me. Heh.

Seems pretty cool so far, other than the fact that I managed to get some weirdo stalking me for a couple minutes, challenging me to duels, trying to 'help' me with my kills... and all the while not saying a word. That's what I get for picking a female character, I guess. :P

And yes, you will get weirdos trying to "help" your female character. LoL. Sometimes it comes in handy.

29. Nope. Creepy undead chick. |

:P
My second favorate character in EQ, and my favorate character in Guild Wars were both Necromancers. So I picked the class closest to that. I.E., I can get health from my enemies, throw a fireball or two, and summon little buddies to take and deal some damage. :)

|
might I suggest Guild Wars? http://www.guildwars.com/I'm super picky when it comes to games, but I really like this one. They hold events every weekend where there are increased drops, or a festival, or PVP bonuses and it changes from week to week. Rollerbeetle Racing is my favorite weekend event. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8GT9Z0PnT4

Edited on Thu Jul-31-08 05:32 PM by pc1971
that's my crack. lucky for me i play on a majority japanese player servers, since it keeps me away from some of the kiddy gamers and immature little twits that aren't exactly suited to a game that's not halo.
i tried WoW, and i wasn't really challenged by it the way ffxi challenges me... and most importantly, WoW doesn't have Dragoons...

26. Neverwinter Nights - it's kind of old now though |
|
Came out in 2002. The sequel is not bad, but the original with expansions are the best.
Mass Effect is a friggin' amazing game and it just came out for PC - it's an XBox import. One part third person shooter, one part RPG, 100% undiluted AWESOME. Best game I've played recently.

That is if you're into shooters at all.
Adventure, however, maybe give the Silent Hill series a shot. Creepy, good story, puzzles and shit to solve. Good times.

The far cry engine, right? Is the game any good? Is it as shoot em up as Far Cry, more cerebral? Tones of free-range to explore?

3rd person, except for bits where you have to take photos (in flashbacks to try and recall memories), then it's first person. I havenm't gotten far yet (no time, haha) but it seems fun, especially for Lost nerds.
