Please, PLEASE! Help me to stop grazing, bingeing, eating, whatever you
Edited on Tue Jul-29-08 01:19 PM by bertha katzenengel
want to call it. I'm bored to tears, the day drrrrrrraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaags.... all i want to do is eat, and i have an amazing volume and variety of snacks free, at my fingertips (just a walk down the hall), and it's been nigh impossible to say no lately. Being full of lunch makes no difference. (One of the reasons I'm obese is because I eat whether I'm hungry or not.)

Can you help me STOP?! Right NOW?!?

PS Sparkpeople is a great site and it's helping me a lot . . . but not today

1. That's a good portion of my problem too.
I'll eat if I can. Not just if I'm hungry.

I think it's helped a bit that now that I'm living with other people, there are rules and one of those is that I can't bring food upstairs. Which means I can't sit at my computer and eat. That's a trifecta of weight gain right there... inactivity, eating, and... er... there is no third. But still.

5. Get better snacks
The ones in the vending machine are loaded with bad carbs and/or sugar.

Here's some from South Beach Diet. Eat these instead of the vending machine crap:

Any from this list: http://kalynskitchen.blogspot.com/2007/01/kalyns-top-ten-south-beach-diet-snacks.html

Pistachios

All fruits (except canned “packed in juice” fruits)

All vegetables

Multi-grain or whole wheat bagels (this does not include refined wheat bagels)

Multi-grain breads ( Milton 's brand at Trader Joe's is excellent)
Oat-and-bran breads
Rye breads
Whole-wheat breads (whole-wheat, not just wheat)

Bran cereals (Fiber One or All Bran)
Oatmeal
Multi-grain oatmeal (Trader Joe's has an excellent one that tastes even better than oatmeal)

Bran muffins (if sugar-free--no raisins!)

Whole-wheat pasta (not just wheat as an ingredient)

Stone-ground pitas
Whole-wheat pitas (not just wheat as an ingredient)

Popcorn (not loaded with butter though--check the carb count)

Sweet potatoes

Brown rice
Wild rice (not “long-grain and wild rice”)

7. good advice. and good variety - if i eat one more carrot
i'm going to turn orange.

if only the food at my disposal were in a vending machine. Cookies & crackers in all varieties, chips & popcorn, and candy -- all free. Free.

8. Maybe you need to schedule a serious snack.
Like a plate of celery sticks loaded with a whole can of tuna, with only a TBSP of mayo in it.
Carrots converts to sugar pretty quickly, which only feeds a sugar craving.

15. No - I didn't find that thoughtless.
I was thinking: "my dietician lied to me!" I gave myself type II diabetes, found out a couple of years ago, and she told me carrots were a good snack.

I know, they may yet be, but the last think I want is to have more cravings.

Go get a snack.

Wait - am I enabling you?

;)

17. I didn't have celery, so I made do with generic V-8 juice.
Just 50 calories a cup. :D

10. I am eating a sugar free popsicle right now and it is pretty good.
Also, I have become addicted to (which is probably not good either) all of those silly little internet "mania" (think spa mania, diner dash) time management games. It keeps one from being able to get up and do anything else. and...thanks.

11. Quick! Brush your teeth!
That helps me curb the urge to nibble...especially since I use Listerine toothpaste, which is pretty strong stuff.

13. yep...the stronger minty the flavor, the less likely you are to eat.
ever taken a swig of soda pop after brushing? Or orange juice? It makes it a little easier.

14. Shock collar?
Sorry, that's a (not-very-funny) joke. I've complained that I'm going to get myself a shock collar to keep myself from snacking because I do the same thing.

There are some good ideas on this thread and sometimes just talking about it helps you stay strong. :hi:

16. Plan snacks every two hours, that have protein.
Hard-boiled egg, rolled-up piece of turkey, fistful of almonds...whatever. Eat protein, it will help with the cravings.

You may need to cut sugar out of your diet entirely, it sounds like you need to break the addiction to it. (I know, I had to do that too.)

And in the end, you just need to require more of yourself. Just sit there and breathe through the craving, don't try to ignore it, be aware of it and mindful of what brings it on. Boredom, stress, fear, anger. Deal with the feeling, and let the craving run its course and fade away.

I saw this on late night tv last spring, and the chocolate imagery was enough that I haven't bought any chocolate since then at all. Negative associations work better than sheer willpower for me.
