Me. Katzenengel - German roughly translated "cats angel" - have a terrible pet confession to make.

My cats aren't up to date on their rabies shots.

They're about to be, because I found a dead bat on the deck last night.

I am ashamed.

How in the name of all that is holy am I going to get eleven cats - three of them half-wild - vaccinated?! Got any ideas?

See. I'm not that great for the animals after all.

I'm not fishing for "there, there" or any "oh, you're okay." I just had to talk about this.

2. dumb question maybe ..
Does your vet make house calls? I know that when we had our Tarn put to 'sleep' the vet came to the house to do it.

I have no clue as to how you could safely, for you and for them, transport them to a vet's office.

Is it something you could do yourself if you had the needles and meds?

4. Is there a mobile vet you can call out?
Back when my mother had seven, one formerly feral, Dr McVeen pulling up in his little motor home was a million times easier than trying to load them all up and take them in. He did discounts for multiple cat households too, so he was pretty affordable. The cats only had to go in to his actual office for surgical procedures.

Don't beat yourself up. Not an ideal situation, but there are far worse things.

Second...give a call to the vet and see what he/she recommends.

6. how long has it been? Many of the shots have a longer life
than just one year - the protection doesn't automatically go "pffffttt!" on the 366-day mark.

Yikes re the dead bat. When my brother in law was an asst. principal at a grade school, a kid brought a bat to school in his backpack for show and tell. :wtf: Bro-in-law was called to investigate the flapping backpack, and while wasn't bitten by the bat, had to have the preventive rabies shots. Owie.

They're all indoor-outdoor? We have 5 indoor only, 2 indoor-outdoor, and those two get their shots first and foremost; the others slide a few months sometimes.

10. Duffel bag
just stuff all the cats in a bag and haul it to the vet. it's less noisy if you put the bag in the trunk.

The cats will thank you for the prompt medical attention

(oh carp! one of my cats needs a rabies shot too)

11. Keeping up rabies shots is very important.
One of my dogs nipped a kid after the kid let him out of our fence. Thank God I keep my dogs current on everything. Don't beat yourself up about it. Just get it done. It probably will cost an arm and a leg though!

21. Mengele! Katzenengel? or Der Katzen Weisse Engel
Edited on Wed Jul-30-08 12:28 PM by HamdenRice
You probably ask your cats, "Is it safe?" while cruelly withholding their rabies shots!

Katzenengel: Is it safe?

Kitty: You're talking to me?

Katzenengel: Is it safe?

Kitty: Is what safe?

Katzenengel: Is it safe?

Kitty: I don't know what you mean. I can't tell you something's safe or not, unless I know specifically what you're talking about.

Katzenengel: Is it safe?

Kitty: Tell me what the "it" refers to.

Katzenengel : Is it safe?

Kitty: Yes, it's safe, it's very safe, it's so safe you wouldn't believe it.

Katzenengel: Is it safe?

Kitty: No. It's not safe, it's... very dangerous, be careful.

:sarcasm:

Do you really want to spend all that money? Maybe the bat died of old age.

24. If I don't, the county can come after me.
Now that the health department knows there's someone out there with eleven cats - I wonder if that's referred to animal control as an abuse case. I've GOT to get their shots up to date so they're not taken away.

 as if animal control could get to them.
