Poll question: Twilight: Edward or Jacob? |
|
Edited on Thu Jul-31-08 08:10 AM by ThomCat
Why?
I know this is supposedly a set of books for teen girls. But it's well written, a good read, and I like the characters. So I've been sucked in.
I really liked the Edward character from the beginning. Jacob gets developed in the second books and becomes awesome by the third books.
The big controversy is whether people think 'Bella should choose Edward or Jacob. The vampire or the werewolf. It's interesting that the moster part of each character is not really their big defining feature as characters.

1. Nobody else here as read these books? |
|
:wow:
It seems like almost everyone I know has been sucked in and has read them. I can't believe that nobody else in the lounge has read them.

2. Girl becomes obsessed with vampire. |
|
From what I've read, it's not a good series. At all. Seriously. What is a teenaged girl doing giving up all her friends to become obsessed with a psychotic, old-fashioned, over-protective vampire?
Terrible. :grr:

8. There are definitely major elements of the story |
|
that are really, really stereotypical, and I've been getting on a soapbox about them a bit.
But it seems to be that the stories are about a supernatureal bonding that is beyond their control. The author makes a big point about vampires having these intense mysticla pairings that don't fade or end. They bond forever. And werewolves imprint just as strongly. Bella and Edward seem to have one of these supernatural bonds causing their obscessions with each other. There are typical, normal relationships behind them throughout the book that make that contrast obvious.
Viewing the books as a being about that supernatural obscession, instead of being about being in love naturally, makes the books less objectionable.
And I like the characters and the pacing.
I used to read books that were much more complex and dense, meant for older audiences. But I find on my bad days that I can only handle fluff reading, so I've gotten into fluff stuff like this.

I was mildly interested by the hype, so I read an excerpt on Amazon and found the writing almost horrifyingly bad. Thank you, no!

Jacob is nice, but he's just a whiny kid in my opinion.. he needs to imprint on somebody else dammit!
