Spoiler alert!
The Jews were in bondage in Egypt. The Pharaoh sent out a decree that all the male Jewish children were to be killed. Moses' mother, a Jewish woman, put the baby Moses into a basket of reeds and set him adrift on the Nile. Moses was found and adopted by the Pharaoh's daughter, and she sent him to the Jews to be fostered. One day, when Moses was grown, he was out with his flock, and God called to him out of a burning bush. God said that Moses should go to the Pharaoh and demand that the Jewish people be released from bondage. God told Moses to tell the Egyptians that the Jews needed to go worship in the wilderness, but really God told Moses that he was going to lead the Jewish people to the promised land. Moses went before the Pharaoh and, by God's gift, turned the Nile into blood, sent frogs, send lice and flies, killed all the Egyptian cattle, sent boils, sent a killing hailstorm, sent locusts, and sent darkness for three days, but the Pharaoh would not allow the Jews to go.

Finally God told the Jews to slaughter lambs, and put the blood on their doors, because God was going to kill every firstborn creature in Egypt, human and animal alike, and the blood would tell God to pass over that household. Finally, after the deaths of all the firstborn Egyptians, the Pharaoh let the Jews go worship in the wilderness.

So the Jewish people followed God in the form of a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. At some point, the Egyptians cottoned to the fact that the Jews weren't really worshipping in the wilderness, and the Egyptians started pursuing the Jews. The Jews were backed up against the Red Sea with nowhere to go, and God gave Moses the power to part the sea. The Jews fled across the dry sea floor, with the Egyptians chasing them. All the Jews were safe on the other side, and God (through Moses) caused the sea to close back up, crushing and drowning the Egyptian army.

After that the Jews wandered around in the desert hungry, and God sent them a rain of manna and quails. This went on for 40 years.

Finally they got to Mount Sinai, and God called Moses to the top of the mountain. God gave Moses the commandments on tablets of stone, and Moses was up on the mountain for 40 days and 40 nights learning all the laws and commandments.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, all the Jews were wondering what was taking Moses so long. All the Jews melted down their gold jewelry, and made a golden calf, and worshipped it. Moses got back in the middle of the party, and he was so outraged he threw the tablets to the ground and broke them. Moses was so angry he commanded the Levites (one of the tribes) to go through the camp killing folks.

Then Moses went back up on the mountain and God gave him a second set of tablets. Moses built the first tabernacle, and worshipped in it. Then God gave unto Moses an absolutely MINDBENDING number of rules and laws.

Then a bunch of stuff happened, and God gave Moses EVEN MORE rules and laws.

Finally, within sight of the promised land, Moses died, and after his death the Jews went into the promised land.
