1. That's a great pick!
Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 05:48 AM by Forkboy
I love that version.

I know others but they're obscure covers of obscure bands so no one would know them anyways :)

ooo ooo,I got one you'll know;

Ministry's cover of Peter Murphy's "The Light Pours Out Of Me".

and on edit add Cheap Trick's cover of Day Tripper.

3. Now, before I mention the name...
The song isn't that great to begin with, and I'm not sure why so many bands insist on covering it, perhaps it's some sort of musical McBeth and I'm just not seeing it. Tool does the best cover of Zepellin's "No Quarter".

Rage Against The Machine also did an outstanding "Renegades of Funk", not to mention Cypress Hill's "How I could Kill a Man".

4. The worst remakes....
Whitney Houston: "I Will Always Love You". Dolly Parton wrote and recorded this beautiful, delicate, and heartfelt song in the 1970s. Then Whitney came along and pulverized it (a la Michael Bolton) with her predictable bellowing style. I know the teeny-boppers loved it and all, but Whitney fucked up a lovely song.

Juice Newton: "Angel Of the Morning" 1981. One question: Who is Juice fucking Newton? Did she ever do a song of her own? Reminds of Linda Ronstadt in that way except Linda was far more talented and ten times better looking.

22. Hank de Vito wrote "Queen of Hearts"
He played pedal steel in one of Emmylou Harris's early bands. Rodney Crowell was another band member & covered the song on his second solo LP.

Rodney is a member of the "Talented ex-sons-in-law of Johnny & June Carter Cash" club; so is Nick Lowe. Nick's pal Dave Edmunds cut an excellent version of "Queen of Hearts".

All roads lead to the Carter family.

...the Nancy Griffith version was much more understated and poignant...

9. Brian Johnson remakes the Animals "House of the Rising Sun"
If you haven't heard it do so. Most remakes are far inferior to the original. I am a Devo fan, but their version of "satisfaction" can;t touch the Stones'.

In my opinion, Johnson's remake is at least the equal of the Animals' and possibly better.

Check it out.

It also works with the theme song from Gilligan's Island (all interchangeable...it can be pretty funny.)

You may flame me, but I always liked Huey Lewis' cover of "It's Alright" by Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions.

"Sugar, Sugar" by Wilson Pickett.

"1,2,3, Red Light" by Talking Heads, and later by Joyride.

add: Johnny Cash's cover of the Laverne and Shirley theme for a car commercial. So cool.

Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 10:20 AM by ProfessorGAC
Another high on my list would be Talking Heads "Take Me To The River".

Others:
Bowie: Knock On Wood
Moot The Hoople: All The Young Dudes
Clapton: Hideaway
Dave Mason: All Along The Watchtower
Cyndi Lauper: When You Were Mine

There are others, but that's enough.
