I Hung My Guitars This Weekend! |
|
I've been talking about it for a year, and my guitar player/friend decided he was tired of hearing about "i'm gonna do". So, he came over with a drill and power screwdriver (more on that in a bit) and helped me hang them in my rec room.
So, i've got 4 guitars hanging, and three on stands. That way, i can grab whichever one suits my mood or the sound i want to hear without pulling cases out of the storage room. I never did that!
It looks really cool, too! My wife is happy because i put a picture up between two of them and next to another (on a different wall) so the room finally looks finished. (The room was completed last July!)
Back to the drill and screwdriver. I am notoriously inept with tools and dreadfully lazy about fixing household things. So, my friend just assumed i didn't have a drill or power screwdriver. I have both, but given the appearance i send out, he figured i must not have that stuff. See how a reputation dogs you?!?!? The Professor

5. It's A Fully Heated Basement. |
|
There are no outside walls! Besides, i regulate and adjust my guitars regularly. Humidity moves wood around more than temperature. (Look up the thermal coefficient of expansion and compare to to the humidistatic CoE. It's more than an order of magnitude different.)
Temperature affect strings more than humidity, for the exactly opposite reason. (And with slight expansion/contraction of the wood due to Temp., you get a double whammy.)
Thanks for your concern, but i'm not worried about that at all. The Professor

3. Hanging them really is the best option. |
|
I had a roommate for a time. Between us we owned at least 7 guitars and 2 basses. We kept them all on stands, but with a drum kit also sharing space with those guitars in a 9x9 room; things got crowded, to say the least. So, we decided to hang the guitars we seldom used, and keep the others on stands in the little closet. It made a huge difference in the look and utility of the room.

I don't have anywhere to post photos that i can link to in DU.
The back wall has my custom Strat on it. It's a 1972 body with a Warmouth Birdseye Maple neck, Duncans, and a Kahler. It's painted the color of the 25th anniversary model. The other guitar is a candle apple 1962 Jazzmaster.
On the block wall, i've got my Dan Armstrong lucite. (I keep the action high, the pickups elevated, and tuned to open D, so i can use it for slide.)
In the opposite corner is my Takamine, mounted to the primary support beam of the house. It's standard tuned.
Then i've got one of those three guitar stands. My JS-1000, which i play the most, my Giannini (tuned to open G), and wine red Standard Tele, which i play 2nd most.
If i can figure out a place to store pictures so i can link a pix to DU, i'll do that. The Professor

would love to see the jazzmaster - I love the rich sound of a jazzmaster. I'm not a player, so I don't know how they "handle", but love the tone.
nice descripts, thanks!

10. The Neck Feels Like A 2x4! |
|
I am so used to my JS-1000, that the neck feels more like a block of wood than a guitar neck. It's actually hard to play! Maybe that will make me work a little harder.
The sound is nice, but not with a saturated tone. It's way too noisy a guitar for that. But, the clean sound is very clear, nicely thin, but without being harsh. I get to pretend i'm Tal Farlow when i use that tone. The Professor

I have a room set aside just for music. Drums in the corner, guitars on their stands,Amps, PA with three mikes, keyboard, and everything ready to go. It's so nice to be able to walk in, grab an instrument and go to town. Have fun.

8. We've Got That Setup Too, But. . . |
|
. . .it's at my drummer's house. There is an extra bass, two extra guitars, 3 guitar amps, two bass amps, a four speaker PA, and all our mikes. (Of course, John's 2 kits, as well.)
But, at home, i had just 2 electrics, one acoustic and my amp out and available. In the next few months, i'm going to buy a computer workstation table, throw away the old desk, and set up two of my 5 keyboards along with my digital multitrack. Then, i'll be set.
Oh, BTW: I forgot to mention in the earlier post, that my piano is in that room too. The Professor

11. Hanging 'em on the wall scares me! |
|
I hope every one of the hangers is well-anchored in a stud, and that you used sufficiently heavy screws, etc.
I would much prefer a stand, available at Musicians Friend (or Fiend, if you prefer), that holds five guitars. Looks kinda like a bike rack; the guitars are stored "sideways" so that rather than facing out, they are turned to the side. I don't have a pic.
I do agree, however, it is good to have them all OUT where you can pick up any of them at will, without having to uncase them!

14. Thanks For Your Concern |
|
Two are anchored at studs using 3.5" screws. The hangers are the same as those at every guitar store in the world that doesn't have the slotted walls.
The other is in a block wall using 3" lag bolts into a lead anchors. The last one uses the same screws but are into the main support beam of the house. (8x12 Timber)
These things won't come off the wall unless we have an earthquake and we don't have many of those in IL.
I have one of those quint stands at the drummer's house and a triple at mine.
I like the wall thing because it makes the room look cool and keeps the guitars out without taking up floor space.
I understand your concern, but trust me, these things are going anywhere. The Professor

23. Are any of the guitars acoustic? |
|
If so, keeping them uncased over time could cause problems with the bindings, top, bridge, bracing, etc. Humidity and temperature changes can really affect an exposed acoustic over time.

25. Thanks For Your Concern, But. . . |
|
. . .in a humidity and temperature controlled room, i don't think that's true. Remember, the case is not a hermetically sealed system. It's not airtight. So, the air in the room diffuses into the cases anyway.
Given the nature of the room, i don't have any such concern. The Professor

I've got a dozen of those wall-hanger things for the various stringed instruments around the house. Mrs. Robb and I thought it would look cool to have them all up... of course, we bought them about 8 months ago, and have yet to install them. :eyes:
Congrats on finishing a project! :toast:
