Poll question: HANDSHAKES
What kind of handshake do you dislike the most? Does a bad handshake reveal anything about a person... or is it just a bad handshake and nothing more?

2. Limp, dead fish one.
It implies that the other person could care less about shaking my hand. At least to me.

3. I don't like people who won't 'shake' your hand but only offer...
Their fingers. It's just not 'proper'.

5. Fingertips only
I'm such a fop. So much so that I refer to myself as a fop. There's nothing as foppish as a fop who refers to himself as a fop.

8. Firm, but not tight
The flesh between the thumb and index finger must touch, and one good shake is plenty.

Look the person in the eye, whom you are shaking with.

If people "dead fish" shake with me I squeeze their fingers.

11. Full grip with...
thumb pressing down on the web of flesh between thumb and index. That gives you a nice firm grip handshake and prevents the other person from crushing you.

Of course, after the first shake, I spin around counter-clockwise and throw my elbow in their face. They never see it coming. :)

You didn't have a specific category for that. :)

17. You don't lever them with the twisted hip thrust and launch them over
your shoulder?

I find I ALWAYS get a second date with that one, especially after I've pinned them to the sidewalk and have elbowed them in the larynx and kneed them in the genitals.

Once the sobbing subsides they're REALLY REALLY friendly!

19. No...
The elbow in the face disorients them. I didn't mention that I'm still holding onto their hand, essentially wrapping myself in their arm which forces them into the elbow harder. I then spin baack out, grab their wrist with my left hand - still holding on with the right and continuing the spin and throw them into a wall.

And this is in business situations where you have to show your dominance right off. Or meeting the new minister.

13. I Have Two Handshakes... One For Men... And One For Women
mostly because women's hands tend to be smaller and their grip less firm. --- I ought not be... but I'm always surprised whenever I shake a woman's hand discover a "man's handshake" being offered to me.

Does SHE have two versions of her handshake? One for women and a stronger one for men?

The world may never know.

20. I've noticed that men sometimes have different handshakes ...
... a crushing one for guys (to prove who's stronger?) and a limp "dead fish" one for women (don't want to hurt her!)

Perhaps males are not comfortable sharing a firm "man's handshake" with a woman?

Perhaps it's an age "thing" or handshaking experience or a matter of respect? Older ladies and younger men tend to offer their fingertips to me.

I prefer a firm "flesh to flesh" handshake, but will hold back if it is not reciprocated. Fingertips only is OK if I've noticed they have coughed into the hand they are offering!

23. I use a firmer handshake with men...
I enjoy the look of surprise on their faces.

Most women seem so weirded out by shaking hands with another woman that I back off some. (Of course, I live in Minnesota now. It's not exactly the most touchy-feely group of people I've ever met!)

I make my living typing. I am also an organist.

Crushing my hands deprives me of income.

Anybody does it to me gets a severe lecture.

16. The Preacher Deluxe
I like it when you get the handshake and then the guy stops it with his other hand, like you are real special. He has you in a hand-sandwich. Those are the best, unless he has a skin disorder.

28. A nice firm handshake.
It actually kinda pisses me off when just the fingers are offered. I may be a woman, but I do like the idea of a firm handshake. Whole hands touching. It's like you think my hand is diseased or something and don't wanna touch me. Don't offer me your hand to shake then. I think it's ruder to offer me your fingers than to just not shake at all. I mean, who do you think you are? Monk?

but a weak handshake is really annoying....

I voted the "dead fish" one...

Maybe it's that these people just never learned the art of the gentleman's handshake...

31. I shake at least 100 hands every Sunday
I've been through all the handshakes. I try to teach children how to shake hands, sometimes asking them to try again until they get to a point where they're connecting fully between thumb and index finger and squeezing at least a little. It's hard when their hands are still tiny.

I've had men nearly crush my hands, though, especially if I don't remember to switch any rings I might be wearing to my left hand. They could lighten up a little and go for the firm, equal pressure grip.

I've also been educated by people with arthritis, fibromyalgia, and other chronic pain conditions that make it painful to shake hands with a firm grip. Often when I am offered a "limp fish" grip, I will try to give the person the benefit of the doubt, assume that a handshake might be painful for them, and just squeeze gently.

33. "other" : the Domination Handshake
is when someone shakes your hand firmly and twists your hand so that his/hers is on top. A sign of wanting to dominate. When given in the rapper kinda way where you both hold your hands palm down and then shake like you are armwrestling is an extreme form of this, but when done in a relaxed way has no offensive meaning. I was referring to using the DominationShake in a professional context.

A dead fish is very yuk indeed.

35. It IS interesting to watch that "top hand" ....
..shake between politicians and such. I don't know if enough people are aware of it to make it really mean anything, but generally the person with more power seems to have the hand on top during the handshake.

36. When a guy offers me a "limp fish"
I have a solid handshake and getting one back will not kill me.

What really gets to me though, is when I go to look a guy in the eye while shaking his hand and see that he's looking my breasts. :grr:
You will not get a cute "Hello, I'm up here!" from me, thats too nice. You will now be ignored completely.
