I volunteered for a congressional candidate 2 years ago who had been a mormon missionary. (He's still a mormon, though a progressive one.) He was really comfortable talking to anyone and everyone and knocking on doors and always very polite.
He was a terrific candidate, and honestly if I had to think of an experience that would be a good prep for running for office later in life, that would be it!

But they never even try to convert me any more. There are dozens in this complex, and they always great me politely when I walk the dog, but I think that honking big statue of Quan Yin next to my door and the Tibetan prayer flags have made their point.
