Poll question: Poll - help me decide on a quilt for my mother. She's been diagnosed with cancer again.
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 10:42 AM by lizziegrace
She was diagnosed with colon cancer 14 years ago and has been cancer-free until last week when a mammogram showed a malignant tumor. Her surgery has been moved from October 6 to September 10th, which makes it impossible to get to Oregon. So I thought in the meantime, I'd keep busy by making the first quilt I've made in years. I found two possibles - both kits in pink for Breast Cancer Awareness. (I don't have time to select fabric and patterns.)

2. Thanks sweetie...
they're both more like throws. (Not bed sized.) I thought if nothing else, they would remind her of her victories over the disease...

It was caught very early. The only unanswered question is lymph node involvement.

3. # 1 carries the message better.
#2 looks more bubble-gummy -- I'd make that for a child obsessed with pink. YMMV.

the more I agree with you. And my mother's not a pinky girly type.

should I root around in my sewing stash for fabrics? I've been real big on pinks or quilting cottons, more in the garment construction but I could check. (and lose a few hours in the sewing room!) :hugs: for you and your mom.

8. If you have some you're not going to use
that would be great. I was thinking about adding a couple more borders to make it larger so she could cover up with it.

I did vote for #2. I like the flowers :)

My thoughts are with you and your Mom as she takes on another battle. Best wishes to her for a complete recovery.

This feels purely selfish. I'm worried about how I can keep from pacing like a caged animal while we all wait...

i like the 2nd one.

But I'm prejudice, as it looks more like they style of quilts my grandmother would have made.

my G-ma was had breast cancer in 1969, and lived cancer free for almost 40 years!! until her death in January (not from cancer)

I miss her.

Best wishes to you and your Mom!

13. It does look like something my grandmother would have made
I learned to quilt from her.

I could use the ribbon as a quilt motif... And it looks like it would be quicker to piece.

Still thinking...

Thank you...

that is a nice thing for you to do for her. I was just thinking, this morning, about quilting... and then you posted this! I'm glad to know several people on DU continue the tradition.

Sending healing vibes for your mother.

18. I like #2 better, except for the border... which is too 'busy' for my
taste. I know absolutely nothing about quilting, and know you want to get it done quickly, but is there a way you could make the border on #2 less flowery? Maybe just have it simple white, or even light pink, then banded by the dark pink?

I don't even know if I'm using the right words -- by "border" I mean the very flowered strip of material that comes right before the thin pink band around the entire quilt....

20. They are both gorgeous! As a person who can't sew a button back on a shirt without
getting loops on the underside, I am impressed with anyone who can make something so lovely.

My thoughts are with you and your mom. I hope all turns out well.

As kits go, I'd choose the first.

22. Thanks Bertha
Her odds for a full recovery are very high. I chose a kit so I didn't have to agonize over patterns and match fabrics. I'll still have to cut it, piece and quilt it. :)

24. I'd choose #1
I like the clean lines. Both look like they'd be easy to piece using rotary cutter techniques. #2 looks a little too fussy for my taste. It depends on your mother's style - if she's a Laura Ashley fan, go with #2. If she's more the IKEA type, I'd pick #1.

Sorry to hear about your mother's cancer. Both my mother and my older sister survived it for decades. I hope your mom does as well.

25. So sorry to hear about your mom's diagnosis. Quilt #2 rocks!
I don't know how avid a sewing enthusiast you are, or if you have lots of fabric scraps, but my mom made a quilt for us that was made of swatches of fabric from all through our family life as kids....one tiny square would be made from fabric from curtains in a house we lived in, another from a pillow covering, another from a piece of clothing she made for me at one time or another, etc.

I love the quilt because my mom made it (she's gone now) and every time I look at it there are hundreds of memories.

Just an idea I thought I'd throw out there.

All the best to you and your mom!

I went through this a couple of years ago, and, while I do appreciate it, all the pink can be a bit much! I wish the best for your mom, and you, too!

mainly because it's in stock and the other had no information as to when it would be available, if ever. I plan to add another border to #1 to make it a little larger and more personal.

Thanks for all your comments and good wishes. Her prognosis is good, but she'll have some rough days ahead.
