Data's cat (Star Trek)

Watching the TNG marathon and this exchange from "Phantasms" always makes me laugh:

DATA: May I ask a personal favor?

WORF: Yes?

DATA: Will you take care of Spot for me?

WORF: Your... animal?

DATA: I am concerned that if I have another waking dream, I may injure him.

WORF: Of course.

Worf eyes the cat, not quite sure how to deal with it. Data gently picks up Spot and hands him to Worf. Worf handles the cat awkwardly. Data reaches out and pets Spot on the head gently.

DATA: Goodbye, Spot.

Worf heads for the door.

DATA: He will need to be fed once a day. He prefers feline supplement one-twenty-five.

WORF: I understand.

DATA: And he will require water. And you must also provide him with a sand box.

Worf nods.

DATA: And you must talk to him. Tell him he is a pretty cat, and a good cat...

WORF: (cutting him off) I will... feed him.

DATA: Perhaps that will be enough.

2. Star Trek: TNG is IMHO the best Star Trek series.
My favorite cast of characters and actors. :D

6. The entire first season was remakes
of episodes from the original series. Lots of recycling. But it did get better.

8. The entire first seasons is fairly lousy. But after that...
I'm sorry, but 'The Inner Light' kicks the crap out of anything in The Original Series other than 'City on the Edge of Forever'

12. Second season it started to get its legs
third/fourth seasons it was really hitting its stride. Then began to flag in the later seasons.

Babylon 5 was kind of the same. Pretty rocky first season. Better second. Fantastic third/fourth. Then a tacked-on fifth season because budget uncertainties forced them to wrap up the main arc in the fourth season. I don't even own the first & fifth season on disc. At least not yet.

16. TNG was what Roddenberry wanted in the series
not the space cowboy appearance of the original.

18. I'd always heard that he pitched Star Trek
as a science fiction version of the Horatio Hornblower novels.

19. I hadn't heard that
Star Trek as a scifi version of the Horatio Hornblower novels, that is. From the various documentaries I've seen, Roddenberry pitched Star Trek in the style much like TNG. He had to change it and make it a scifi western, since that was the prevailing TV style at the time. He had to fight tooth and nail, for almost every week, as well as every season. Fortunately, he had help from devoted fans writing to NBC every week. :)

20. I did not know that
Many years ago I had a book called "Making of Star Trek" and I recall the Hornblower stuff from that. It's also possible that I'm misremembering.

15. They capped the joke
After Data leaves, Worf eyes Spot, then the bad ass super warrior starts sneezing. Yeah, this will go well.

The writers had a lot of fun with Worf.

"Prune juice. A warrior drink!"

(From memory)

Worf's in dress uniform, preparing for some soiree. Riker comes in.

Riker: Are you ready?

Worf: (Jerking at the tunic) This uniform, it looks like a dress.

Riker: Worf, I'm surprised. That's the most sexist thing I've ever heard. (Two beats) Besides, you look good in a dress.
