The Beach Boys never said a WORD about this.
All those wonderful tunes, those wonderful songs of surf and sea and sand, and after all these years,

someone who'd just been to LA told me the sea water was COLD!

OUR sea water on the East Coast is still warm.

The Beach Boys NEVER mentioned this. The closest they came was this:

And if my woody breaks down on me somewhere on the surf route (Surf City, here we come)
I'll strap my board to my back and hitch a ride in my wetsuit (Surf City, here we come)

“Surf City” by Brian Wilson

and that was recorded by Jan and Dean.

:sigh: The cruel reality....

1. The water in Southern California is warm compared to Northern California.
When I lived in Southern California I could be in the ocean all day. Here in the north it's so cold you could lose a foot to a great white shark and not notice until you saw blood in the water.

Swimming in warm ocean water is weird to me. It's like swimming in pee, probably because when I was growing up our community "kiddie pool" was heated to something like 90°F.

2. Two trivial facts here
1) The Atlantic ocean is warmer - which is why hurricanes are far more common on the East Coast than the West, and when they do hit the West Coast at all, very unlikely it would ever get north of Mexico.

2) Brian Wilson never surfed a day in his life. Ironically enough, Dennis Wilson was the only actual surfer in the Beach Boys. More ironic than that is the fact that he drowned. Though not surfing at the time.

5. Drove from East to West coast in 1975,
waded in the Pacific near San Francisco, my feet turned blue. Was also very dirty and smelled bad (Water, not feet).

We just had several medical waste dumpings (used needles on the beaches) in New Jersey, and I wonder if they do this dumb shit in California or just here.

6. Jan and Dean helped co-write "Surf City"
Brian came up with the general tune and initial set of lyrics, then it was revised by the duo.
