Anyone here know anything about garage door openers? |
|
Our garage door opener over the past couple of weeks has decided to get all wonky on us. During daylight hours it does not want to close all the way, unless someone is at the base station and holding the base station button until the door is completely closed. We have cleaned off the dust from the electric eye lenses, the electric eye is hardwired so we do not need to replace batteries. I have one of those buttons in my car that is programmed to close and open the garage door and it is programmed properly, but the door will not close all the way when I use it during the day...
What could it be? Quite frankly it is driving me bonkers and really beginning to piss me off.

It sounds like a mechanical problem to me...
But honestly I don't have any idea beyond that...
Sorry.

In So. Cali., it's not "wonky." It's "fubar."

4. I Don't Know What's Wrong |

But, trust me on this, do not climb a ladder and try to fix it. Garage door openers cast an evil spell that makes women fall off of ladders and fracture our wrists. I speak from experience.
I'd check and see if there is anything blocking the path of the infrared sensors. They might be misaligned, so the brains of the opener thinks there is someone or something that might get squished.
I used a web site called Service Magic to find a garage door opener repair person. I wish I had done that before the cursed thing caused me to fall since I couldn't have fixed it anyway.

5. Have you lubed the hinges and rollers on the door recently? |

Sometimes they need an application of penetrating oil every year or so. That worked when ours was doing the half closing/half opening routine.

6. I will try that - but like I said, it works fine when it is dark out. |

7. When it's dark it's cooler |

and maybe the slight contraction helps. I've never had your specific problem but we've had all sorts of bizarro problems with our very old and heavy wooden door and the old opener. We finally replaced the opener and that took care of most of the hiccups.

9. I'm bettin' it's the temp change too. Expansion/contraction kinda thing. |
|
Ours does it in the winter. We have no problem the rest of the year but come winter and below freezing temps and we have to play with the darn thing to get it to close all the way.

10. Are your lenses in line? |
|
Sometimes they can get knocked out of line and the door won't close.

13. Mine done something just like you explained. |
|
My right hand door would sometimes close when the sun was out, but more often than not it'd start to close then reverse itself. I finally fixed it by cutting some 3/4 plywood and screwing it to the sheet rock (into the 2x4) the sensors were mounted to. Turns out both sensors were loose and not aimed that well and when the sun was out for some reason it just wouldn't close. After mounting them nice and solid on the plywood I haven't had any problems since. The previous owner had one of them propped up with a card board box....LOL both were just screwed into the sheet rock without anchors.
At first I couldn't understand the problem because the green led would stay lit but the door would reverse no matter. So I tried some kind of force adjustment that didn't do a thing for the problem....I suppose I learned something about garage doors...maybe not.
good luck.
