DU Feminists, what do you think about THIS new hit song (warning:Country)
This country song by Brad Paisley is receiving major airplay. I heard it today on my commute. This is the one of the most offensive country song I have ever heard--the message is subtle but clear. Yeah, the little woman, she tries, but she really needs me there to take care of her. If she can't even handle her womanly duties, you know, like baking, then how the hell is she going to handle REAL responsibility? But she's just so darn cute I put up with her, the little angel--just a child who needs my gentle care and guidance.

The song reeks of paternalism and the Eve complex. And it is getting major air play. Yuck!

"Little Moments"

Well I'll never forget the first time that I heard
That pretty mouth say that dirty word
And I can't even remember now what she backed my truck into
But she covered her mouth and her face got red
And she just looked so darn cute
That I couldn't even act like I was mad
Yeah I live for little moments like that

Well that's just like last year on my birthday
She lost all track of time and burnt the cake
And every smoke detector in the house was goin' off
And she was just about to cry until I took her in my arms
And I tried not to let her see me laugh
Yeah I live for little moments like that

I know she's not perfect but she tries so hard for me
And I thank god that she isn't 'cause how boring would that be
It's the little imperfections it's the sudden change in plans
When she misreads the directions and we're lost but holdin' hands
Yeah I live for little moments like that

When she's layin' on my shoulder on the sofa in the dark
And about the time she falls asleep so does my right arm
And I want so bad to move it 'cause it's tinglin' and it's numb
But she looks so much like and angel that I don't wanna wake her up
Yeah I live for little moments
When she steals my heart again and doesn't even know it
Yeah I live for little moments like that

Something along the lines of, "I was a stupid young bride...got my BS 'cause I was tired of HIS BS. Tie it in with him eyeing the barely legals and they got a hit! Possibilities are endless.

5. It's a really stupid song but
if I'm channel surfing and I see the video, I pause. Brad Paisley is as cute as a bug's ear. I can't help but look at him.

I guess it never struck me as particularly offensive. Just really, really crappy.

11. Brad IS pretty cute, and the song is very dumb.
I'm disappointed that he chose it. He's one of the slyer country singers, and doesn't seem prone to wave the flag and thump his chest like some of the other ones. He's got a pretty good sense of humor. But it is a CRAPPY song!!

He co-WROTE it. He does have a good sense of humor, but he has an overactive sense of schmaltz to go with it, unfortunately.

It's those little things that she does that makes me glad I married a woman who can cry because she burnt my birthday cake. Because that's what she should feel: SHAME.

:eyes:

What kind of brainfucked moron thinks like that? And the lyrics sound like they were written by Diane Warren's hellspawn.

36. I'm with Kamika.
I think it's very cute, and the video is adorable. Kimberly Williams is his wife (the cute girl from the Father of the Bride movies from the nineties). I thought the song was cute. She's a little spoiled and girly, so, maybe she really did burn his cake. And maybe he really was surprised and endeared when she first cursed in front of him. I think it's a great song. You just have to appreciate country music. And Brad Paisley.

16. It's a poorly written song.
A lot can be construed from hearing the performance, though, which I haven't done.

It could be a "she's not perfect, but I love her anyway" song, which is fine. After all, HE's not perfect either, though the song doesn't say that.

Alternatively, it could be a "she's dumb as a post, but she gives good head" song, in which case it's unbelievably sexist.

I'm serious here. Many different meanings can be taken from the same lyrics by different performances.

Actually, it reminded me of "Close Enough to Perfect," or whatever that song was. I think Alabama performed it. Sample lyric:

And drinking puts her out just like a light."

24. I listen to country music radio a lot
and I think it's a stupid song. I don't like it at all. Not for political reasons necessarily - it's just a bad song.

There's a really sexist song called "Who's Your Daddy?" by Toby Keith that I like, even though the politics are horrible. It's catchy. (Go ahead and flame me; I'm too tired to care. It has rained for two weeks. No sunshine. I want to die.)

Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 06:53 PM by mvd
I think he has a lot better songs. This one is very mediocre and the writing is formulaic. I think Brad means to say that he loves his woman more during vulnerable moments and making mistakes - it's supposed to mean he's showing great devotion. I can see how it can be taken as offensive, though, if taken literally.

GIT YOUR BISCUITS IN THE OVEN

"You uppity woman I don't understand
why you gotta go and try to act like a man
But before you make your weekly visit to the shrink
You better occupy the kitchen, liberate the sink"

"Get your biscuits in the oven and your buns in the bed
Thats what I to my baby said
Woman's liberation is a-going to your head
Get your biscuits in the oven and your buns in the bed!"

It goes on but I'll spare you. Kinky is the same nutcase who brought us the immortal "They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore" and "Homo Erectus" back in the 1970's. I think he was doing a lot of drugs. Now he writes detective fiction. He's the ultimate misogynist.

41. Oh, I know he was being sarcastic.....
They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus anymore is my favorite parody song (Biscuits is a close second). But his music is so much more than that....Wild Man of Borneo, When the Lord Closes the Door, and Rapid City South Dakota are three of the most genuinely sensitive and sweet songs I've ever heard. And I'm looking forward to reading his work. He's a little twisted but I tend to like twisted people-they're more entertaining.

Kinky Friedman is just one of those people you can't stereotype. He's one of a kind...

47. Ooh! Ooh!
I found another example of this sort of unacceptable misogynistc lyricism!

1. My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
2. Coral is far more red, than her lips red:
3. If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
4. If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
5. I have seen roses damasked, red and white,
6. But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
7. And in some perfumes is there more delight
8. Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
9. I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
10. That music hath a far more pleasing sound:
11. I grant I never saw a goddess go,
12. My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground:
13. And yet by heaven, I think my love as rare,
14. As any she belied with false compare.
